New Sony K800 niggles (

Well i strolled into the 02 shop yesterday and asked if they had any K800's in stock, to my suprise they said yes , i then asked how much on there low tarrif and they said £79.00. So i took out a new contract as my exisiting one has a few months to go so i could'nt upgrade just yet. Then at the end of the paperwork they realised that it actually costs £129.00, not £79.00 !!

The good news is they let me have it for £79.00, there cockup

I did want to use my exisiting sim but i could'nt because the new sim is 3g, so my old simm won't do it, that means telling all my new number, oh well.

So anyway been playing with it for a day and i have noticed that listening to radio there is a high frequency morse code going on in the right ear mainly, sometimes the left ear as well. It can do it while manually scanning, or even when you are listening to a radio station, it stops and starts, bloody annoying !

anyone else suffering from this ?

Also i find the keypad very clicky loud to use, like if you want to type a text message for example, i am comparing to my existing k750 which is nice and quiet, anyone else notice this ?

I properly have a duff one regarding the morse code problem, thats my sort of luck, if there is a duff one in the shop i will get it

Otherwise a great phone, but maybe going back though !!

get o2 to send you a 3g sim card then you can transfer your old service onto the 3g sim that what i done.

Cystal clear radio here

the keyboard does have a more tactile feel but I can't say I had noticed the noise excessively until you mentioned it

Posted by silmer
I just put my old SIM in. No problem. Dont think much of the instruction manual. Nothing about code locks. No explanation of screen icons.

Posted by masseur
i just experienced this radio issue. its a definite background noise that is unrelated to the station selected and sounds almost like the interference you hear when a mobile phone is placed near a radio.

I found that turning the radio off and on got me back the crystal clear reception but not before getting a loud noise in the ear as the radio turned off, so watch out for that.

all seems well now though

Any of you find the ear piece sound a bit muted or as though there is a solid cover between the ear piece and the ear?

Posted by kanjerraja
i seem to be getting a inactive sim message on my sim now and then not sure if its a phone fault..

Posted by colinw
Well i managed to get my phone replaced this lunchtime and the new phone does not suffer from that strange radio problem

The keys are still very tactile, so that's just how they are, though i did prefer the keys on the k750.

I do seem to have a bit of stray light coming from the bottom keys and casing in each corner, and in between a couple of keys when it's lit up, don't remember seeing this on the first phone, funny how they vary slightly from phone to phone.

The funny this is my first phone had 64mb of memory, this new one has 70mb

How weird, both from the same 02 shop with different memory capacity

See how this one goes now ?

Posted by colinw
ok an update now, this phone also does have the radio problem, but not as bad as the first one ?

Bloody strange this, the first phone did it pretty much all the time, regardless of signal strengh, but this one only seems to do it on a weak signal, ie lot of noise in the background.

I was just listening to capital radio and held up the headset lead, the signal was noisey and it was doing it for ages !! high frequency bip bip bip bip etc.

So at least its better than the first one, but it still does it, maybe its specific to 02 firmware ?

Oh what to do now ?

Posted by masseur
I didn't experience the problem again on my trip home tonight so perhaps there is some event that causes it to start and it won't stop until you turn the radio off and on

Posted by SonySandy
Maybe it your phone polling for a transmitter your hearing? Stick your phone in front of a monitor and phone it, or stick it next to speaker and phone it, gives the same effect... you'll get some wicked interference! Actually try it next to an ipod, now that is cool, screen goes nuts and volume goes up and down.

Posted by Aldrew
I have this same problem, very anoying. I thought it might have somthing to do with the 3g so turned that off but it's still there and pretty much all the time, no matter what station I have on it. Luckily it is quiet, but still. I thinking it's just a bug, and will get fixed in a firmware update.

Posted by colinw
Oh well i gave up with having two phones doing it, so i returned it to the shop and cancelled the contract. I took out a new contract by mistake anyway as i did'nt realise my existing contract was up for renewal, silly me.

Back to my K750 now which does all i want and more, it was good to try the k800 out anyway

Posted by masseur
although I did experience it twice on the O2 K800 that my son now has, I have not experienced this all week on my generic version and I''ve been using it both directions on the train to/from work and also at lunch times walking around town

still, if you're happy with your K750 then I guess you can look around for something else for your upgrade

Does anyone else find that menu speed has a small bit of lag on it the odd time? If not, what theme are you using?

Posted by masseur
the initial popping up of the menu icons does seem slow, and sometimes if I push the joystick in and then immediately move it left I get the "write new" menu instead of the dektop icons, but navigating the menus seems adequate and comparable to the k750

I'm using the nightshot theme

Posted by ghostfreak
Hopefully new firmware will increase the browsing speed.

Posted by mrwoll
I agree about the initial lag of the menu.

Something I was having alot of trouble with, I know it sounds silly, but getting the blasted back cover off to get to the sim. It just doesnt budge the first couple of times you try.

lol I had the same trouble.

I was badly hungover so I had a short fuse anyway and I desperatly wanted to play with it.

came so close to throwing it.

Posted by craiggg
when i went to put my sim in the holder, i sliced some of the top off my sim

does this phone have a torch??

No it doesn't have a torch.

I had a load of stick getting the back off too when i rang o2 earlier. The woman had to wait ages for me to get it off so I could read her the number off the sim to activate it, three of us tried and couldnt get it off for a while.

Should be ok as it's mostly plastic. The metal connectors are the only thing you need to worry about

Posted by masseur
the sim holder is pretty much the same as k750/k700/t610 etc though I've always felt that could make it easier.

I have found that removing the back cover can be easy if you hold the phone upside down with the bottom facing away from you. grip both side and use both thumbs to push down and slide away from you. It does stake some force but once the slide starts it comes right off. again, the design could be made to make it easier.

The 8800 back is the worst in my opinion but I do like the moto V's for ease of removeal of the back

We've got two in the house and they both randomly throw up a white screen while doing something then it goes black and quickly comes back to life but where you were anyway so not a full reboot.

It does it most when rotating a picture in and mms creation.

Also (list being edited as found):

- crashes if you try to open an MMS where the received icon has displayed but the handset is still downloading the content

- crashes if you try to rotate a webpage using the * key while it's downloading

- can't get any email to send although can receive, seems to have been noted elsewhere

When sending emails you dont use the smtp server used by your email provides. You need to use the one for your phone network. There is a configuration tool on the se website.

i had a lot of trouble removing my w810 back until i discovered if you hold it in one hand and just use the thumb of the same hand to slide it pops off very easily. Using the two handed method took a lot of force, I gather because you're pushing down on the back bit that doesnt slide off and kinda lock it intil place more firmly. Not sure if its the same for k800 or not.

It does not help, unfortunately, if the SMTP server does'nt want SMTP validation. For some reason, the email client tries to send blank login records to the server, which, depending on which internet provider you have, reacts differently. I have tried with an SMTP server that does require user login, and then it works.

keypad tones turn themselves off on mine for some bizarre reason
usually after listening to mp3s

Great Phone but can somebody tell me how to change the text size when you enter a phone number manually...? The font is Huge and my eysight aint that bad!!

Posted by masseur
sorry, but I haven't seen a setting for that.

better too big than too small

Do you find the warning tones and startup tones very quiet...

Maybe its just me as this is my first sony..

Eversince posessing the phone for five days, it had crashed two times with a white screen splash and total freeze-up. Removal of the battery was the only help to solve the issue. Other than that, the FW seems to be quite stable in playing with menu and using standard functions.
Hope this restart issue will be solved in the next FW versions.

Also, as smn had already noted in a separate thread here, I can't seem to find the Update Service for K800i on SE website. Maybe this is due to unavailability of next FW for the phone at the moment.

Mines on O2 but had a few niggles with mine but overall a far superior phone to the K750. I presume Firmware updates with fix the bugs.
One problem I noticed was I copied a large file to the Memory Card and after deleting it the free space didn't go down. I had to eject the Memory Card for the free space count to be reset

I am really disappointed that there isn't a light for video recording. That is absolutely rubbish. I feel a bit robbed.

I've found a bug on my K800 (R1CA018) which is the inability to use numbers to jump to sub-menus on the File Manager, which brings up the ABC search facility instead as if you're in the address book (and then jumps seemingly at random through the list). It almost looks as though it's jumping to item 4 if you press 4, but it doesn't always!

And, opening the camera cover should activate the camera from any mode but usually doesn't. Even holding the camera button won't always activate it. I know that some Java applications will prevent the camera being usable, but if you're in the menu and want to take a photo then it should be possible without having to hold back up and wait. Why have BestPic to not miss the moment if it can take 10 seconds to fire up the camera!!

Firmware update please.

So, I've got myself one of these K800 phones, and I've found the following problems/niggles/questions, although I'm going to have another play tonight in case I did something wrong:

1) When recording voice activation words, the beep you wait for is very quiet, i.e. I can't hear it.
2) I can only program in 10 groups (a bit odd, a multiple of 2 would be more logical).
3) I can only put a maximum of 15 people in each group.
Anyway, that amounts to a maximum of 150 people that can be grouped. I think I read somewhere you could have 1000 contacts. That doesn't seem to add up to me.
4) I'd like it if the contacts were arranged by groups, with the little +/- symbol to expand them, similar to mail folders in outlook...
5) If someone's house address is long, it doesn't fit, i.e. if they have a house name instead of number.
6) There doesn't appear to be a fill flash, e.g. if it's light enough for the autoflash to be off, but the subject is in the shade (Trying to get a cat to pose in the sunlight is quite tricky...).
7) Will I be able to upload new firmware via my USB cable?
I don't think much of the software bundle.

Only 6 really bothers me though.

Other than that, it's fantastic!... although I might find some more...

Oh, and I get that white screen business, and the occasional lock-up (for a few seconds) as well as the green line in video mode.

Cheers,
Rob.

Ah bugger, thought of something else.

I know there is a plane mode, but is there also entertainment mode, i.e. switch of the phone HW?

I'm likely to use this phone just for entertainment quite often when abroad, so don't need all the phone stuff enabled, but plane mode switches off the radio.

Anyone know a way of just switching off the phone?

Posted by docmagoo2
@ junebob

I find the power button helps switch off the phone

For some reason my K800 doesn't seem to recognise its own phone number.

Even though I have an entry in the phone book for myself, including the mobile number, if I send myself a text message, the phone only displays the number - not my name.

Anyone else have this problem? (well, its not much of a problem as I don't send myself many texts! I was just testing out the phone when I got it!)

Strange, just tested it on mine and comes up as "My Number"

Dont like how the k800 doesnt show up as a removable drive in My Computer unlike the k750 which did. Just dont like that SE phone manager program, prefer to do it through explorer and find it so much easier. I know i can just plug me M2 card straight into my laptop but i carp meself that i will end up snapping the card slot cover on the phone.

Both the phone and memory card show up as 2 separate removable hard drives on my computer when i put the phone in 'file transfer' mode.

Hmm strange...im using XP home and downloaded the SE PC Suit from the se website, did'nt bother at all with the cd supplied with the phone?? Gonna have to investigate this!! anyone else having this problem or is it just me??

Posted by SCORPIONKING1982
maybe you have to remove pc suite?

Use the CD. For some reason the downloadable drivers don't install properly from the website.

You can use file transfer mode and the PC should just set up as an ordinary USB flash drive (skip the request for the K800 driver and it will work). For the other stuff, you'll need the CD before PC Suite works properly.

If u have an alarm set and make/receive a call, when u hang up it shows the alarm time on the left and the right (above the date).

Not that it's a problem.

Anyone else got an unresponsive joystick combined with the UI slowing making the options simply not move?!
