Elegant Z550 clamshell delivers quality 1.3 Megapixel camera and crisp colour screen
18 May 2006

London, UK - 18 May 2006 - Mobile phoners looking for quality, style and good looks will love Sony Ericsson’s Z550, announced today. Finished in a combination of premium brushed metal and high gloss material, the Z550 is a classy partner for work and leisure with universal appeal.

The 1.3 Megapixel camera has 4x digital zoom and takes great snap shots and video for capturing those unpredictable moments. These can be viewed on a crisp, bright colour display. With 20MB of onboard memory expandable to 1GB, it’s simple to store and share a large collection of pictures using MMS, Bluetooth™ or e-mail.

“The Z550 has an exclusive, understated feel that’s a tribute to our iconic phone the T610, and features a 1.3 megapixel camera, unusual for a phone in this sector” said Jan Wäreby, Corporate Executive Vice President, Head of Sales and Marketing, Sony Ericsson. “In all, the Z550 is a phone that breathes quality and value.”

Finding shots once you’ve stored them is child’s play with the new thumbnail gallery feature. This allows you to search your images both visually and according to the date they were taken with multiple thumbnail images being shown on the 262k sharp colour screen.

The Z550 connects easily to a PC for fast transfer of multimedia files and synchronisation with your phone book and calendar. The phone also has full HTML internet browsing and optional Bluetooth™ headset and car-handsfree kit for wireless freedom on the move.

The Sony Ericsson Z550 is a GPRS clamshell camera phone available in Sterling Black or Pearl Copper and starts shipping during Q3 2006. It is available in the following variants:

Z550i Tri-Band GPRS 900/1800/1900 for Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific.

Z550c Tri-Band GPRS 900/1800/1900 for Mainland China.

Wow, definetly my z530 replacement

Posted by PeterKay
No bad, maybe for my mrs!

Posted by IRFCA_WDG-3A
Not bad - So, this is finally what we had been seeing as the SE123.

The thing still remains to be seen whether the aluminium bits are for real or just a bit of well-finished plastic as in the K700.

Posted by brix25
It looks very plasticky to me.

I like this phone as a second phone, hope its cheap cos then it can replace my K700 as a second phone

I like it

Looks like the back of a K700 doesn't it?

Sorry, I thinks hes messing around with us.

Why doesn't bring out a REAL tribute

Anyhow, I can't find any pics of this phones keypad. I do like the silver and copper finish though and this, correct me if I am wrong, seems to be an entirely new model and not a variant of and existing one.

@goldenface:
Here is a pic of it open.
And here is the photo library.

The feel of the Z550 is VERY solid.
I got my hand on it for some weeks ago, and It felt really good.
I only got it for 2 minutes, but it felt like real metal, no plastic-feel at all!
This is not going to be my next phone, but I do like it.

Looks pretty good. Good specs for a low-mid range phone. I think this will replace the W550 in the W550's price bracket. I know this is being picky, but the screen just seems a bit too high in position when the phone is open.

Posted by Spitfire
I like this one. Clearly the one i think was the moste interesting of the new ones beside the W850. i jusst wish that they stopp throwing out loads of walkman phones.

understated feel, yes. but i dont find the t610 in this. i still feel the w810 is the first phone that continues the t610 legacy

Are those stereo speakers under the screen?

I was just about to say that.

@Arde
I highly doubt it as the Z550 uses an upgraded UI, like the menu found in the K800, and the K750 uses the old UI.

Posted by Charge
So the z550i uses the same new UI as the k800/K790 etc?
And it allows you to have multiple java apps running?

Posted by shaliron
@Charge
Yes, it has the identical UI to the K800, with a lower screen resolution. It has an activity button, so yes it can run multiple Java applications running at once.
And welcome to Esato

Yes, they are compatible, you can use K750 themes on a Z550 and Z550 themes on a K750. I've done it. SE themes tend to be compatible as long as the screen resolution is the same.

The z550i UI is something of a hybrid between w810 and K800. No RSS, but it has the same MP3 player as the K800.
And no, you can only run a single java app at once. The phones that support multiple apps are the new Java platform JP-7: K610, K790, K800, W710, W850 and Z710

Thanks for the info:)

Ok, a couple of more questions:

1) Can you turn off the camera sound in the Z550?
2) Is it possible for JP-7 (or at least the multiple java apps thingy) to be implemented via a future firmware update?
3) Can you play videos in full screen mode?
4) Can you pause a video? Can you fast forward/rewind a video?
5) What's the message memory like?
6) Does the built in browser support
a) Downloading in the background?
b) Multiple tabs/windows?
c) Minimizing?
7) Can you copy/paste? For example: Can I have opera mini running in the background, receive an sms with a link, copy the link into Opera and then use it?

Lol. I know that that’s a rather long list of questions but any help would be really really appreciated...

Posted by kalleboo
1) Yes, at least in my region (EU4)
2) Probably not, and even if it was they wouldn't do it
3) No
4) Yes and yes.
5) Can't remember
6)
a) yes
b) no (not even the K800 does this)
c) no (not even the K800 does this)
7) yes

Thanks 4 the info.

Damn this phone is cheap in Australia! Only $199 PAYG from Vodafone (shudder) which is equivalent to about 80 pounds. Seriously, now the K510 will have to be really cheap to look enticing, and same with the rest of the market.
And just as a side note the K750 is $279 (112 pounds) with an SE bluetooth headset now. Everything is crashing in price in Australia!

Hi, Its been a long time since I last posted, Just wanted to pick a phone tommorow- My brother wants K 510i or Z550i..I've seen the K 510i...about the Z550i I just wanted to know..can it play MP3 ringtones on call or not...Says only Polyphonic..But I really wanted to confirm that..and Hope it has better reception..! Also, Does it need to be left opened to play music, or we can minimise the player and close the flip.

Posted by shaliron
@dj_wolfinstein
I'd get your brother to get the Z550. Memory expansion, the unbraded player (so you can play with the flip closed), better screen and design, and you can play mp3s as ringtones. The K510 is stuck with 28MB of memory and is worse in every way, except for the camera, which is it brilliant. The Z550 on the other hand, has the worst 1.3 megapixel camera that I've ever seen. It's pathetic, even worse than the W550's camera, which was bad.

Its true abt the z550 camera which is very very worse compared to my previous w550 ...can it be because the camera version is 2.0 whereas in my previous w550 it was 4.5

Posted by Charge
How does the Z550's UI compare to with the W550's? Also how does it compare with the k750i's UI? It would be really nice if someone could point out specific advantages/disadvantages...

Posted by c_vignesh
Z550 UI is more refined than K750 but somewhat inferior to w550 in terms of no flash lite support and no full screen video ...but has a better Net front browser..can someone tell what is the latest firmware for z550..mine is R6BA and camera version is 2.0..pls let me know the latest version

Posted by Charge
I just bought a z550i... ask me if you have any questions..

Posted by c_vignesh
What is ur firmware version ? Does media player have a full screen playback for video

Posted by Charge
No fullscreen vedio playback, no fullscreen picture viewing and no zoom feture while viewing picures...

My software version is:

CXC1250583
R6BA033

Posted by c_vignesh
My firmware is also the same..for viewing pics in full screen..in pictures folder open a picture then go to more menu and select slide show

Posted by Charge
@ Vignesh:

Not what I meant... Have you used a K750i/W810i or something similar? In those phones you can view pictures horizontally and they take up the full screen.. That way they look much better.

Well, technically, you can do the same with a Z550i if you rotate the picture but then it gets rotated permanently... i.e. Its rotated even if you transfer it to a comp and view it...

And you still can't zoom in... which is really really pissing off...
Wish I had an app for viewing pictures which could do all this...

Btw do you have a memory stick micro? If you then what’s the price and size?

Posted by ghostfreak
The latest firmware (according to wotan) is R6CA009.

Posted by ary
is there any doc about changes in R6CA009?

Posted by Charge
I tried to upgrade (or whatever you call it) my firmware less than a week back and it said that I already had the latest version... So this new firmware must have been released recently right?

Posted by c_vignesh
I have used a W550i before..i know what u mean..but than can be done inside the camera pictures folder..am i right...if this new firmware R6CA has any noticeable updates..pls post it here..i dont have a memory stick micro..but i have seen a sandisk 512 mb for 33$ with free shipping in amazon

One question for Z550i owners. If you take out battery of phone, about 1 minutes, and then insert it again. Do you loose time / date / and navigation key shortcuts ?

Can't seem to remember that this was the case on other SE I've had. Although wouldn't suprise me if Z550i doesn't have a 'backup battery' for more than a few seconds of battery change. All other settings in flash is retained though. Just want to verify that it is standard for Z550i.

Posted by westsynd
can se z550i support external accessory Flash MXE-60 ?
The flash mxe-60 pic

Posted by Charge
Yea, I have the same problem with my Z550... though my old k700i didn't have it...

My Z550 does not support the camera flash accessory... When I tried plugging it in (its my friends, he has a K750i) it just displayed the accessory name and didn't do anything...

Posted by westsynd
the flash acessory is automatic...there is no extra menu for it , and it will flash when environment is not bright enough....does it work ?

Posted by shaliron
That's probably because it is placed in an impractical position to the camera (which is on the top whilst the flash is on the bottom).

Posted by westsynd
does flash accessory works on z550i ?

Posted by shaliron
@westsynd
No it doesn't.

Posted by westsynd
where can i find newest firmware for se z550i ?i can , plz provide me a link.thx
