If you don't know what Ten Tors is, it's a walking event that takes place over two days on Dartmoor during a specific time period in May.

400 teams of 6 people (2400 14 - 20 year olds) walk at three distances depending on age limits.

35 mile route: 14 to 15 years
45 mile route: 16 to 17 years
55 mile route: 17 to 20 years
(17 year olds must have previously completed a 45 mile route before they are eligible for the 55 mile route, and teams may be composed of males and females in any combination)

The teams have to navigate around the moorland using only detailed OS maps with compasses and using details on the map to guide around.

On the backs of each individual team member, they must carry:

Sleeping Bag
Tent (Inner or Fly with poles or pegs)
Stove
Marching Rations for both Saturday and Sunday
Emergency rations
Survival Bag
Spare Clothing: T-shirt, long shirt, trousers, 2x socks, fleece
Water Bottle of at least 1 litre
Morning and Evening meals
Hat, gloves
First Aid kit
Waterproof trousers and jacket

Plus more which I've probably forgotten. If we ran out of water all that had to be done was simply fill up from a river and stick in a chlorine tablet!

Any contact with people not doing the event themselves or Army staff concludes in disqualification if asking for help or directions, same applies for going into a shop or using any sort of technology e.g. a phone or gps device.

This year I did Route R and managed to walk 30 miles on the first day with my team, from 0700 starting on Saturday until that evening at 1921. On the Sunday the team woke up at 0345 and was ready by 0530 (including the packing up of tents and having breakfast and so on). We then walked the next 10 hours struggling with aching feet and bad shoulder pains, including sunburn and dehydration to finish the event. Coming second overall out of the four school teams and having aload of blisters to confirm I really had walked 45 Miles with a total of 22 hours+ walking.

08:23- From Okehampton Camp - Kitty
09:56- Lynch
10:56- Great Mis
12:12- Black
13:01- South Hessary
15:10- Trowlesworthy
19:21- Pupers Hill
07:07- Combestone
11:17- Sittaford
13:04- Watern
15:20- Okehampton Camp - Finish

As you can see on the first day we did so much walking. and that was 30 Miles roughly in distance.
From Pupers Hill on Sunday to Okehampton Camp that was 15 miles. It took a longer time as we were all knackered basically and dehydrated and lost spirit towards the end of the walk until the finish where there's an incredible atmosphere. The pain goes as around 200-300 people cheer you in for completing the walk and you're feeding off emotion and adrenaline.

Route R

And finally my two medals showing I've actually done the 35 and 45 Mile expeditions!

The Bronze is for the 35 Miles and the Silver is for 45 Miles. Gold is for 55 Miles which I don't want to think of yet

Ta for reading, I know it's lengthy but it took a hell of an effort and I didn't want to go unnoticed this year

Not done any walking events, but I have completed the London Marathon twice, and completed the Great North Run twice.

Great achievement and awesome medals. I can believe the sentiment that belongs with them.

Have you ever done Duke Of Edinburgh? Its kind of along the same principals, walking 13km a day for 2/3/4 days depending on the award. I have done bronze and carried a 12kg bag for 2 days in the Peak District and it was relatively easy but the Ten Tors looks like a real challenge!

Yeah some guys from our school did DofE, that was 17 miles over two days in the sunny hot conditions of Sunday just gone, sounds sort of easy but then you have the six months of dedication of organising and other things and teaching little kids how to play football or something.

Yeah, thats the bad thing about it, you have to do a service, physical and skill. Apart from that its good fun and gets you outdoors
