In addition to its earthquakes and the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco is widely known for its high population of gays and lesbians. How did so many gay people come to call the city by the bay their home? The answer may surprise you...As it turns out, the U.S military is the main reason so many gay men settled in San Francisco. During World War II, the United States armed forces "sought out and dishonorably discharged" homosexuals. Many men who were expelled for being gay were processed at San Francisco bases.

Thats proberbly due to the sex industry within soho, and the liberal attitude towards sex thats always exsisted in the area, suppose gay people naturally felt comfortable settling in an area where such activity was tolerated.

I was in San Francisco 3 years ago with the missus for my birthday. We never seen any Gay men or Lesbians the whole time that we were there. They tend to live in one neighbourhood called Castro, which is located at the end of Market street.
I dont mind Gays or Lesbians, but one thing that hacks me off, is in Manchester there is the Gay Village as it is called, and certain bars will not let you in if you are straight. Now can you imagine saying to a Gay man or Lesbian, that you cant come in this pub because you are Gay!!!!!

I'm not homophobic - I'm not scared of my home! Peter Kay, classic.
