V800 - not detecting when the phone's flip is closed

I've just bought a V800 to fix up, and it has a problem where the exterior screen is not working. The internal screen is flickery, but I've already diagnosed that down to a tiny gold pin being missing on the LCD connector (not the one on the PCB).

However, I don't think the external screen's problems are due to this. The phone appears to not recognise when the flip is closed - when you open the phone up it is still on the clock screensaver, and when you close the phone, the phone's lights and screen light don't go out straightaway, they go out after a few seconds (as if they would if you kept the phone open).

Question is - why is it not detecting the phone is closed? Does it have a small magnet (like the Samsung T100 etc.), switch or detector that I suspect is not present? Whoever had the phone previously has obviously had the phone open, and made a fairly ham fisted attempt of it too

Next question is, does anyone have a switch/magnet unit spare so I can fit it to this phone?

Also, can just the ribbon of the LCD be replaced, or am I looking at a total unit replacement to fix this missing pin problem?

The V800i uses a small magnet for sensing when the phone is closed. I have heard they are easily lost when the phone is opened up. I think the sensor is to the top left of the keypad but I am not sure. The best way to test it is to find a magnet and run it over the phone.

You're right JC!

Just tried with a magnet and hey presto! The screen lit up! Now, does anyone have one of these spare?

Oh, and something else, the signal seems fairly weak. I've got a 2G Orange sim in the phone (It's been unlocked at some stage), which when I first got it barely had a signal at all (Found a tiny, round connector which hadn't been connected when someone else had the phone open that needed connecting to the motherboard - seems to have fixed problem!) but is better now but still below what it should be.

Am I recieving the Orange 3G signal, despite my sim only being a 2G one? Could I concievably use orange's 3G services (with the right settings) with my old Orange 2G PAYG sim?

And is there a way of 'forcing' the V800 into 2g mode permanently (Like with NECs that have an option to use 2G only)?

EDIT: There is a small red 'G' in the corner with the signal bars, does this mean the 3G signal?

As far as I know, the G means that the network has GPRS coverage.I don't know where it says if it is 3G or not.

I agree the G is for GPRS signal. It will come up with 3G for 3G reception.

Thanks for that

Any idea why the signal appears weak?

When I had one the reception wasnt great.

I was wondering as I'm situated almost on top of on Orange transmitter and only getting 2-3 bars reception.

btw, has anyone got a spare V800 internal LCD, and a spare magnet?

I might start a 'wanted' thread for those items too

i wonder if that's a general problem with unlocked V800s - do they all have poor signal when unlocked?

I might try updating the firmware and see if that makes any difference.

Now managed to source a dead V800, I'll stick my current mainboard into that phone when I get it!

Any further ideas on how to fix the abysmal signal on the phone? As it is it's barely useable
