How can I keep GPRS always-on ?

I’m really sorry for cross posting, I posted this question under "GPRS, WAP, MMS and Email setup" forum two weeks back but no one gave an answer, and I really need to sort this out soon. So I thought I’ll get better response over here.

My problem is: how can I keep a GPRS session live?

My local service provider is charging 2 cents per each new session I make. I noticed that when using Opera mini or a chat client like IM+ the GPRS icon turns on and off regularly, especially with IM+ this happens several times a minute; and if each time I pay 2 cents I’ll end up paying a lot if I continue to use GPRS like this.
So I really need to find a way to keep the connection live. I have used 2 Siemens phones before, and both of them had the option to keep the GPRS always active, and I have seen a similar setting in Nokia phones as well. Why isn’t it in the K750?

Does any one of you know how this GPRS session works? Is a session made for every HTTP request I make?

This facility is available in nokia phones

Gprs internet means u have it always on. In my P910i I have an option on connection time-out which u can leave 1,2,5 min or never solving ur problem.On k 750i ..read the manual it's all in there, as usual.And if u dont have it just download it from SE.

Messenger, use Colibry IM, it keeps the connection... always... you can even minimize the program

To keep the connection in opera mini, do it like this

@701
I read the manual; that is the first thing I did after failing to find it in the phone settings. Its not there.

@gh
Thanks for the link, I’ll try out those things and see if I can find a work around. Seems like they too are having the same problem.

I called my service provider’s support line and they are not too sure about the session thingy as well, they said in Nokia phones you have the option but not so sure about how the K750 behaves, and they asked me to contact the technical division by e-mail . Still no reply.

In the meantime if you guys have any other ideas let me know.

my service provider is 27 cents per session connection! It's a rank overcharge, but because in Australia general internet browsing by the general public is still new and most gprs is single connection like send an mms or download a game, so the networks have got away with the high charge so far.

for example to even consider internet radio here (which works a treat) is mad due to the high cost (2c per Kb at 25Kbps = $30 PER MINUTE).
However that's only one session connection charge of 27 cents, making it $30.27 for a minute of internet radio.

I've never used IM on the phone. The K750 appears to have no way of making the connection permanent (I looked on mine). The alternative IM client mentioned above sounds like the go.

$30 per minute ?? That’s insane !

Compared to your rates mine are much better: 2 cents startup and 0.0002 cents per KB (about 20 cents per 1MB) in USD.

QuickIM does the trick, I left it on for about 30 mins and then checked Settings -> Time & Cost -> Data Counters; it said that the last session was 35mins, so I think the session was maintained.

So far that seems to be the only way to get around using an IM without paying through the roof, and for using opera I use the workaround mentioned in that other thread : first load opera and minimize it, then go to some site with the phone’s built in browser and resume Opera, it seems to work.

Why the hell did SE left out the ability to maintain a GPRS session ?? Its not a big deal ! even the cheapest Nokia and Siemens handsets with GPRS have it....

insane all right. We dip out hear in Australia because the networks have failed to realise what tech junkies aussies are. Aussies, love technology, but they won't pay top dollar. They'll wait until it's a reasonable price. We aren't stupid.

The networks haven't grasped this yet. They think no ones uses mobile internet because they aren't interested, but it they provide it at a reasonable cost (even if they make a loss initially) then aussies would use it by the gigabyte, then the cost of provision will be very cheap.

Actually the other reason they haven't provided it cheaply is because they want to lock us into their proprietary content (vodafone live, optus zoo etc). Properietary content costs nothing to download, but a picture or ringtone costs $5 plus!!

So by making the general internet browsing expensive, they hope to make their own expensive content seem better value.

It's not working. No one uses vodafone live or any of that shit!!!

Great solution! Mobile phone is always connected to AP, GPRS session always active.
