tell me what you think

Posted by Chazzer3
Is this you're site?

Posted by Cycovision
The prices are about right, although maybe a little TOO cheap in some cases and the descriptions are a little vague. No mention of what optical drives are in there, motherboard make and model etc. It's just a little bit too 'empty' if you know what I mean.

Also, I don't like the contact information bit. They claim to have a sales office but the contact number appears to be a mobile!

Speaking of which, they sell mobiles too? I'm going to make a bit of a generalisation here, but computer specialists don't normally sell mobile phones as well, certainly not on the same site anyway. Surely you'd set up a seperate enterprise and site for that?

Personally, I wouldn't buy from them but of course I'm biased. I'd certainly be calling that phone number first asking for more info and testimonials anyway.

Posted by Alton_Towers
Cheers cycovision. I've now removed mobile phones and added laptops and custom building options, please tell me what you think

Posted by Cycovision
Yeah, that's looking much better

Any way you could offer a landline number for contact rather than a mobile? Even if it diverts straight to your mobile. It just creates a more professional image, that's all.

Also, ask your existing customers for testimonials so that you can post them on your site. It does increase customer confidence, expecially those who are wary of buying online.

Posted by Alton_Towers
Yeah thats a good idea, what do you usually do for advertising?

Posted by Cycovision
Well, we're a bit different in that we are a PC repair and support company. We do sell new PCs but it's more to our existing customer base rather than 'the man on the street'.

However, we built up our customer base in a number of ways. At the start, we used A3 sized posters that we attached to lamp posts, traffic lights etc. Not strictly legal, but it was cheap and quite effective.

We also joined every business club that would have us! Word of mouth is the most powerful way of promoting your business of all and speaking to other business people gives you access to a wealth of knowledge and experience too.

Adverts in the local papers can work well but we've found that splashing out on one, big advertising feature works better than going for a series of smaller ads over a longer period. It's expensive (our last one cost us £800) but we did make the money back with more on top.

You might be thinking that since you're selling online, none of that would work for you. Not so! You can spend hundreds of pounds on google adwords and such like and still not make a single sale. It's a frighteningly cut-throat market that you're trading in, you need to give people very strong reasons why they should buy from you and not the likes of Dabs, Dell, PC World etc. and the best way to do that is to communicate your message in a more personal way.

Make it clear that if they buy from you, they will get REAL support, not some £1.50 per minute helpline that basically tells you to stick your restore disk in and lose all of your data! Let them know that you only use top quality components in your PCs, making them more reliable and problem free. All of this needs to be on your site and any other literature that you might produce for promotional purposes.

Have a look at the wording on our site, www.fastfixcomputers.co.uk and see what you reckon. Yes, the website looks s**t, I'm not much of a web designer but we do know that the message gets across!

Posted by Alton_Towers
Thanks for that. I may try all the free submissions for now and put a testimonial up, like you suggested

Can other people please comment on first impressions etc???

site looks kind of basic and that might put buyers off as like they may think if someone selling pc's they would have a techincal site etc also new logo

Posted by dude_se
pc i saw was £550 on that site. ive seen a better one with the same stuff included (not freebies) and a latest all in 1 printer for £669 so that isnt that cheap and the monitor was 17" in the package i saw.

Which is exactly why it's so important to push the quality of your merchandise and after-sales service

You don't get a crappy printer, but you do get peace of mind and a crash-hot PC

Look at Dell. You can get a s***y celeron system with tft monitor, printer, camera, speakers, teasmade, wheelbarrow and cuddly toy for £299. What they don't tell you is that replacement Dell parts cost rediculously large amounts of money. A normal PC case fan costs around £2.50 inc. VAT (for a good quality LED lit one). A bog-standard Dell case fan costs £35 + VAT!!

Which is why when you call for your £299 Dell system, they talk you into taking out their extended warranty which just happens to cost £349. Your £299 dell system has ended up costing you £648!

I'm not preaching here, this is for the benefit of anyone looking at selling PCs. It's impossible for a small retailer to offer the kinds of deals that the big boys do, so you have to look to other avenues. And it can work, there are lots of people out there that would rather pay a bit more to buy from a small, reputable expert than from a large, faceless, uncaring organisation. You just have to identify the oppositions weaknesses and capitalise on it!

Ive got some good prices on my website

Posted by clank
Offering a copuple of suggestions from a buyer's point of view i'll have to say:
a) make the site more attention grabbing....looks too basic as of now
b) details mate details....for ex i had a look at your AMD extreme base unit..........i'd definitely like to know the brand of dvd re-writer/geforce card etc, brand and speed specs of ram, brand and rpm rating of hdd etc
c) mention anything worth mentioning(ie something you've done out of the ordinary).......for ex like water cooling was mentioned you should have mentioned the case is an antec super-lanboy......apart from looking good in specs it also gives confidence to the buyer that at time of delivery you wont give just any "stylish" case but only what you show in pic......same goes for all other components
d) remove the "A" before every spec ie dont write it as "A water cooled............." IMHO that looks very unprofessional.

Posted by Alton_Towers
Thanks, i'll be taking it back to the drawing board tomorrow

I did run a successful site, for those that of heard of it...
simos-mobiles.com???

dell have not met up to my standards, seem cheap, and everyone says they are crap.

One more suggestion is to remove the "computer base+ monitor category".............give the buyers the choice to select a monitor of their choice(something like you've done with OS) with "computer base" itself if required and quote additional amount for these.....this will increse your product portfolio as now your computer bases are not attached to one particular monitor.

Posted by dude_se
and diff size monitors. give people more flexibility

Uh why not?
I know directly of computer companies doing that here in NZ, fleshes out their catalogue, allows geek buyers to buy their phone and computer parts in one place. I don't see why more computer shops don't start web advertising mobiles and PC hardware.

When I was working for an importer/retailer here in NZ we certianly made that move on the website, offering everyine from handsets to pre pay top up cards. This worked out pretty well (The margins weren't half bad either )

Posted by Cycovision
@ gigs

I did say I was making a generalisation

Maybe it's a UK thing, but the idea is that if you want a PC, you go to a PC shop. If you want a mobile, you go to a mobile shop. It can be seen as a bad thing to be a jack of all trades, especially in the technology market.

I see where your coming from, but the idea is to appeal to the non-geek audience. Also, it's hard enough to persuade someone to buy a computer off you, never mind a mobile at the same time.

Well that much is true.. part of the reason I'm not in that game any more

Posted by Alton_Towers
Hey, ive updated the website again:

1) Got rid of base + monitor and put an option instead
2) Put makes and models for different components

Also created a new logo, but i want some feedback on it first

That last one wouldn't be a bad case badge design if you're going to badge your PC's as well.

Posted by Alton_Towers
Yeah, the pc's will be badged

Posted by WelshTom
don't know about everyone else but for me the pictures above the main text on the front page don't load up.

apart from that it's a nice looking site certainly better than i could manage without cheating and using templates - lol!

Welsh, I spotted it earlier. Pics now are operational, have another look

Posted by WelshTom
looks great mate! did you use progamming language to create it or did you use some sort of package like frontpage. reason i ask is that i am keen to have a go at creating a website just for fun but i don't know any programming languages at all so looking for good but simple software packages to help me!

Tom

Posted by Alton_Towers
A mix, the shopping basket would be extremely difficult to write, so i used help. The layout, design, logo etc, created by me
