Serious Bluetooth issues with K750/W800

Right I know there have been a few mentions in threads of Bluetooth issues with the K750.

I have been having great problems with my (fully up-to-date K750, R1L002) with regard to maintaining a stable Bluetooth connection with various bluetooth headset and car kit devices.

I have bluetooth built into my car (Citroen C4 VTS) and it is awesome. I have used it with my SE P910, a Moto V3 and a Nokia 8800, and it always perfect, BUT since I got my K750 I had problems. I have definately ruled out the car (as all the other phones are still perfect, as is my mates SE V800).

The phone pairs fine with the car, and it connects, but every 10 mins or so, it disconnects, and then randomly reconnects, it's bloody annoying. The phone also does this with various bluetooth headsets (SE, and Bluespoon). When it is connected and I try to make a call, the call starts in the actual handset, and then randomly switches between the car kit and the handset!

I also recently aquired an SE W800, and surprise surprise, it is exactly the same.

I emailed the lovely people at SE Customer Service, and look at the reply, god, I laughed, I was trying to work out if they even read my mail!!!

My email

Subject: Bluetooth issues with K750i.
I am having issues with my Sony Ericsson K750i handset, with regard to the
Bluetooth connection.

The phone has problems maintaining a constant Bluetooth connection with
either a car kit or Bluetooth headset. The handset will successfully pair
with the other device, but once connected it constantly disconnects and
occasionally reconnects.

I have this problem with both my Sony Ericsson Car kit (HCB-30) and my Sony
Ericsson Bluetooth headset (HBH-660).

I have returned the K750 and had it exchanged, but both the the old and the
new handset are the same, and I have also updated the handset to the latest
Firmware version (R1L002), which is supposed to have sorted the issue, but
it has not helped, the issues remain.

Other than the Bluetooth issue, the phone is excellent, but I use it has my
business handset, and it is vital that I can use it safely and legally in my
car, and until this issue is sorted I am unable to use my handset.

I know it is definitely the K750 at fault, as I have also used a Sony
Ericsson P910i, and it works perfectly, as well as trying it with my friends
Sony Ericsson T630.

I would appreciate some information as to when Sony Ericsson plan to rectify
this issue.

Regards

David Sharp

I was wondering if anyone else is having some similar issues??

.. lovely people at SE Customer Service.. David, I guess they are as 'lovely' the world over.

Now, I too bought Akono 660 with my fingers crossed as I had heard these various things. Thankfully it works okay with P910 (which I rarely take out of the pouch) and also with my S700..

Besides, K750 has had some teething troubles, YET not resolved. Had this buddy of mine from whose K7 (to my S7) I kept getting 'connection failed' for every other file I tried to BT to my phone.. ..

Posted by fu1at
just wondering do u experiences any auto restart moment with ya phone... blank screen(white) then a few sec later the phone prompt go back to normal.

if u do... please go back to service center... i got a friends faced the same problem as u mentioned here... and he got his K750i replaced.

This is similar to a problem I have with my v800 and a Ford Mobile Ease car kit.

My z600 worked great and so did a v3 moto. Now I'm stuck with aphone that does not like my car kit and it is annoying.

It sounds like several of the newest hadnsets have issues with car kits.

Huh buddies, i feel sorry for you but should you have read all over the net you should have realized that SE in general is not a friend of bluetooth technology ! It looks like they've introduced bluetooth into their handsets because the competition did so.Some of the models stil use a cradle for up/download and upgrades ! If you want solid bluetooth connections go look somewhere als :-)

Posted by k4m!k4ze
@mario - Sony Ericsson were one of the first to incorporate Bluetooth into their phones. In fact the BlueTooth specification was first developed by Ericsson

Posted by mario2002
Indeed, Ericsson (and Nokia) are huge network providers too. (ericsson is the biggest) and hence they've helped to develop bluetooth. The problem here is, SE is a different company with its own goals and decision making management. It looks like proper bluetooth implementation is not guaranteed, even if one of the SE parent companies were involved into its development.I know is sad but this is the truth, otherwise this same tread should have not existed ! Greetings from South Africa. Mario :-)

Mario,

As stated before Ericsson invented the BT technology, they then made it license free so other mobile phone makers would impliment them into their products.
The Ericsson T39 and R520 were the first handsets to have BT. Since then all (mid-class to high-end) phones from Ericsson and SE have had BT (in fact it's the other brands that have followed SE in supporting BT, not the other way around) .
The implimentation of the technology isn't always perfect, and they have come a long way. My R520m just eats up the battery with BT on, my K750 hardly consumes more battery power. Most early model nokias with BT were useless with an SE headset and only worked with the nokia ones.
I believe that of all brands SE is the best in supporting BT, and certainly are commited to the technology and its implimentation.

I'm pretty sure these teething problems with the K750 will be resolved promptly with a future FW update.

@dietbrand:

I agree with you 100%

Posted by Nnnnsic
It's not actually a teething problem so far as we understand it.

From what I've heard, the version of Bluetooth that Sony are using in this model is a proprietry Sony version that can only properly support Sony Bluetooth equipment.

One of those lovely ways to get you to buy Sony's Bluetooth accessories.

I have a k750 and the problem i have with its bluetooth is im able to transfer files from my phone to pc. If im transferring from pc to phone, the connection usually gets lost specially if the size of the file is 50kb or more. Im already using the latest full version update of my bluetooth device from bluesoleil but it still haven't solved my connection woes.

...My god.. same here. the bluetooth service with the K750i and even the D750i is absolutely crap. works ok with geniune SE products, but the moment you try it with anyone elses products it either doesnt connect properly, falls down after the first connection. or just doesnt work at all..

When will it be fixed? or won't it?

Posted by happycheesecake
Hi guys

I've just set up some 2,500 K750i phones complete with HBH-662 headsets, and most of them won't stay connected for more than 12 hours. I chatted with our SE manager and she put us in contact with a developer @ Ericsson.

The K750i / W800 has Bluetooth 2.0. And unfortunately BT 2 wants to connect using EDR - Enhanced Data Rate. Bluetooth 1.1 & 1.2 don't support EDR.

From what I understand, the K750i / W800 tries to reconnect using EDR every 15 minutes or so. This can cause the connecting device to drop the connection...

Posted by Str1ker
Does this mean that if we connect our K750/W800 to a Bluetooth 2 device, it will work perfectly and eradicate the problems that seem to occur with devices using Bluetooth 1.1 & 1.2?

Posted by Del
Maybe thats why my bluetrek g2 dosen't work with my K750.

I just found these specs on th the g2

Operating distance: 10 meters
Weight: Around 12 grams
Capacity: Up to 9 hours talk-time and 300 hours stand-by time
Bluetooth: Single-chip solution; Complies with Bluetooth specifications v1.1
Ear compatibility: Reversible hook for either ear with smooth material for long hold
Battery: Rechargeable Li-ion with low battery indicator
Noise: Cancels background noise
Volume: Adjustable volume

Bluetooth 1.1

If this is the case then it appears to be a waste of a good headset

Posted by happycheesecake
I'll hopefully give you folks some info later once I've tried something supplied by SE to see if it gets around the disconnection issue...

Probably Tuesday or early Wednesday.

@happycheesecake

Thanks,

Lets hope it works.

Posted by onezone
...Looking forward to the update/news.. and lets hope it does.

anyone know if the new 608i ? or K608i (the 3G model) uses the same "new" bluetooth, or does that one connect ok?

Posted by floatlite
Finally after contacting, Citroen technical in France the route cause of the issues in my bluetooth woes have been discovered.

As someone previously mentioned the K750/W800 is BT 2.0, and the bluetooth built into the car is BT 1.2, which, whilst theoretically compatibile, lacks the full support for BT 2.0 specs, and hence periodically drops the connection.

Answer, get a different phone that supports the 1.2 profile, which I already know, as I have my P910 etc that works perfectly.

The annoying thing is SE continue to claim that the K750 is compatibile with all there BT headsets which clearly it ain't.

What can you do eh!

Posted by happycheesecake
@Floatlite - you're talking about a Citroen C4, yes?

Had a PM from a C4 VTR owner with the same issue with a W800i. Also, BMW have stated that the K750/D750/W800 phones are NOT compatible with their cars...

Posted by floatlite
I am indeed, C4 VTS, it's a pain in the ass, but ahh well, back to trusty P910

Posted by max_wedge
so who's to blame?

SE, because they bring out phones with the latest technology?

Or the car manufacturer who can't or won't update the bluetooth in a car worth tens of thousands of dollars, making those cars obsolete (in respect of phone integration) and therefore also need to be replaced at the same rate at which one replaces their mobile phone, just to have the latest in mobile phone technology? Or the alternative to keep your nice car for more than two years, and miss out on a great phone?

Man, what a joke. This is NOT a problem with SE phones....

Posted by floatlite
It is a problem in so far that SE are WRONGLY claiming that the product has backwards compatibility with BT 1.1/1.2 devices, including their own headsets and car kits.

It turns out that this is not the case, and the implimented BT tech in the K750 and associated products does not work with these devices in a usable manner.

David

Posted by max_wedge
Okay I agree it's wrong of SE to claim something that isn't true, but this may not have been intentionally misleading. The EDR issue may have been completely unexpected.

But why shouldn't an $80000 car have upgradeable Bluetooth? It would seem the better way forward for everyone concerned.

At what point does a manufacturer stop being responsible for compatibility of their devices with every other possible device on the market? Ultimately if it is an issue with bluetooth 2.0, the standard of which is designed by a multi-partite industry body, how is SE to blame?

Posted by happycheesecake
@Floatlite - try turning on the BT "Power Save" option of your phone before enabling BT and connecting to your car.

It might work. Its meant to disable the phone from linking to multiple devices, and to stop it poling for EDR...

Posted by floatlite
I have just recieved an update for my car, which has addressed some issues with BT, I have also gained a few new features, I can search the entire phone book from my steering wheel, as well as read txt messages on the main HUD of the car. I now get all my voice mail, txt, and some MMS on the car. Full voice dialing is now active as well, and works amazingly well.

I can verbally speak a number and it picks it up and dials it, if it's not in the phone book.

I am going to try the powersave option and see if we get a positive result, good idea. cheers fella!

Posted by happycheesecake
I can confirm that the three new phones I'm testing (as part of my job) ALSO have the disconnection issue with the headsets I'm testing against. One is the W550i.

I can also confirm that this ONLY AFFECTS THE BT HEADSET & HANDSFREE PROFILES. I've had a bluetooth link between a K750i and a PDA active for over 72 hours with no disconnection.

have confirmed (well, two of their firmware developers have) that there is "an issue" with the headset & handsfree profiles.

I too have this responce form SE, quote, "we are looking at some discrepincies with compatibility issues"

Seems like they have either not applied some protocols in the way most devices need to operate in a usable manner.

Ah well, I remain hopeful it gets sorted, I have aquired some sat nav to test on my phone (P910) so that'll keep me occupied until SE correct (hopefully!) the issue.

Funnily the P910 with BT 1.2 can maintain a link with my BT GPS reciever and the BT car at the same time, and it works perfectly, it even auto changes between the call and the nav when needed.

The issues of modern tech eh!

which reminds me, I get my official PSP tomorrow from Sony, 1 day before official release, LOL, how generous of them!

Posted by j79
So nothing more ?

Did SE gave a date for a new firmware which could solve the problem.

That' a shame I'm using the internal HP to phone from my car !!

HAPPYCHEESECAKE - BT Headsets are not all that it doesn't work with..

I have a TOMTOM GO 700, and it doesnt work with that either. it will state that it is connected, but you hear nothing from the TOMTOM speaker when you try to make or receive a call.

The tomtom has a BT Handsfree kit built into the unit, works fine with the K700i, and various other models and manufactureres of phones, but not with the K750i or the D750i

I am about to sell me K750i and my D750i as theres no point in having a BT Phone that doesnt work with my BT Car kit,

Have also spoken to TOMTOM, who state they are aware of the issue with the K750/D750, and are currently unable to offer any hope of it working.

Mann... I dunno..

Yeah, sorry mate. Should of said that the problem was with the headset & handsfree profiles. I've updated the original posting.

... Out of curiosity, does anyone know if the new K608i (for t mobile) has the same CRAP non back compatible, all singing, all dancing - useless Bluetooth that the K750 D750 has?

Just to add my that my W800i won't work with my BMW Bluetooth.

I have a trustworthy Motorola HS810 BT 1.1 headset and it performs flawlessly with my k720i, muich better than it did on my k700 which kept losing connection or did not want to connect at all...

What are the advantages of BT 1.2 over 1.1? And those of BT 2.0 ? Intersting to buy a BT 2.0 or 1.2 dongle to use with k750?

Thanks !

... So... Happycheesecake..

Any news on this amazing "fix" or solution?

Posted by Paco
Anyone know if the new 750 firmware fixes any of the BT issues?

Posted by happycheesecake
I can confirm that the new firmware R1N035 does NOT fix the disconnection issue.

However, pressing the button on the headsets I've got (HBH-662 and HBH-660) now re-connects the headset to the phone - which is a start.

There is another firmware coming soon (!) that seems to fix the issue. We've tested firmware T1Q065 that has maintained a connection to various data links/headsets for upto 7 days without disconnection. Unfortunately I don't know when its going to be released.

Hi all,

Yes I am having the same problem. I have a SE W800i with T-mobile in the USA, along with a TomTom Go 700.

They pair without problems.
I can dial a phone number from the TomTom without problems.
I can download the phone book into my TomTom without problems.

HOWEVER...
After establishing a call, I cannot get any audio on the TomTom, nor can they hear me.

With the W800i, once in a call you can hit the "More" option button, and then select "Transfer sound" option to send audio to the TomTom. However, even after doing this I get absolutely no sound. Worse, after selecting "Transfer Sound" the w800i is unable to re-establish a link with the TomTom ... not sure if the problem is with SE or TomTom.

I did find the email address of the TomTom USA President: Jocelyn.Vigreux@tomtom.com

I suggest we all email him and ask for help in resolving this issue, as TomTom support has never gotten back to me!

Here was what Sony-Ericsson has to say. Looks like the W800i support BT2 and maybe that's why we are having compatibility issues:

-----------------------------------------------------
Thank you for contacting Sony Ericsson Online Support.

There is no information in regards with the compatibility between Sony Ericsson
products and third-party products such as the TomTom Go 700. If you would like,
we recommend contacting TomTom to inquire if they are able to provide further
information on the compatibility between the TomTom Go 700 and the W800i.

We have provided the following Bluetooth specifications for the W800i to help
determine if the TomTom Go 700 Bluetooth specifications are similar. The W800i
is manufactured to meet Bluetooth Specification 2.0.

The following are the Bluetooth services supported:
- Dial-up Networking Profile
- Generic Access Profile
- Generic Object Exchange Profile Headset Profile
- Object Push Profile
- Serial Port Profile
- Synchronization Profile
- Basic Imaging Profile
- Handsfree Profile
- Headset Profile
- File Transfer Profile
- Human Interface Device (HID) Profile

If we can be of any assistance in the future please do not hesitate to call one

AND HERE WAS TOMTOM'S REPLY:

Bluetooth coding within each Bluetooth stack is different between devices and manufactures. Because of these differences, not all Bluetooth devices are compatible to connect to any other device using Bluetooth. The engineers in Amsterdam have tested this devices and it is not compatible. There are no specifics as to why. If you want a phone that is compatible, please stick to the compatibility list here: http://www.tomtom.com/product[....]?ID=77&Section=107&Language=4. These are phones that are compatible and can support if you were to run into any configuration problems. If you have any further questions, please contact us.

I have been following this thread with interest as it seems that the problems I have are relate. I have a Holden commodore (Australian model) with a factory fitted Bluetooth kit. This kit has worked without problem with my old T610 and my wife¡¦s K700.

The kit itself is 1.1 compliant. I have been unable to get it to work properly with my K750i. Initiating a call from the car kit registers the with the phone but quickly loses its connection.

Anyway here is what I received from SE about 1.1 compliance¡K

Thank you for contacting the Sony Ericsson Call Center. The K750i has Bluetooth 1.2 and meets Bluetooth 2.0 specification. The K750i may work with third party Bluetooth hardware using Bluetooth 1.1 but Sony Ericsson can't guarantee that it will function to it's full extent. Please contact the third party vendor regarding this issue. Currently K750i is compatible with very limited hardware, not all Sony Ericsson Bluetooth hardware is compatible with it unless explicitly specified.

Best Regards,
Syed Aziz
Sony Ericsson Call Center

It looks like my only option here is swap it for its poorer cousin the Nokia 3230. Too bad I sold my iPod in favour of the K750 ƒ¼ should have made sure everything was ok 1st.

I'm really hoping someone here more informed than me can set me right. As its a cool phone but useless to me without the car kit.

Posted by onezone
Seems to me.. only way I can see to fix this .. is to make the K750i and D750i Bluetooth 1.1 compatible.. god knows how !

Posted by speedyandre
Maybe you can try to connect an external BT1.2 receiver

Posted by puffe2
I think I have a related problem.
My W800i also shows a white screen and restars after beeing connected for a while to my Mac TiPowerbook G4 with OSX 10.3.9. A bigger problem however is that I can´t seem to sync my phonebook, calendar etc with the mac program iSync 1.5, the "Connect with iSync" is greyed out in the bluetooth settings dialog

I´m using an usb bluetooth device that probably is BT 1.1 or 1.2.
anyone else experienced and solved this problem?

Posted by Jools
You need to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and iSync 2.1 for W800 support.

http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/isync/devices.html

Check out the "Apple Macintosh and Sony Ericsson issues" thread too. This is a Mac-specific thread!

./..So. are we any nearer to fixing this useless phone to make it work with "older" bluetooth products?

Err... because its a bluetooth 2 device ! - the problem is with older devices (if you've read this thread you would notice that)
