Java platform is a small part of OS and it's
runtime environment (not OS). if you don't know what's this then google for it. it's exactly the same situation like in PC. you can create 2 types of applications:
1) applications created for OS and compiled directly to native machine code
2) applications created for Java platform and compiled to bytecode (too much to explain) which is "translated" in runtime environment
is Java platform necessary? well, just take a look at PC, do you need Java installed to run non-Java applications? no, you don't because these applications are created for OS: Win, Linux, etc. what about mobile phones? you also don't need Java when you can create native applications for mobile OS, but... well, that's the problem! we can't do this officialy because
don't want to support this kind of programming (no matter of what many programmers can do this). however, Java is the only official way for users to create and run applications in the phone
