VoIP comes to the mobile

30 October 2006 by axxxr
"fring" is a 3G mobile application that allows you to make free mobile calls and send instant messages (chat) to other fring users and PC based VoIP services such as Skype and Google Talk at no extra cost beyond your existing data plan.

All you need to use fring is a 3G handset optimized for 3G networks with Internet connectivity that is already available from your mobile service provider.fring can be simply downloaded into your handset via SMS received from another fringster or from the website. It’s as easy as downloading a ring tone.

fring works transparently over 3G networks while bypassing traditional mobile voice and sms text messaging services. This means that fring™ enables mobile-to-mobile calls, mobile-to-landline calls, and mobile-to-PC calls including integration into Skype and Google Talk services wherever you are.

fring, patent pending peer-to-peer Mobile VoIP technology, is the only PC independent, completely free mobile VoIP service with no air-time costs, no need for proprietary hardware and no WiFi or other VoIP network limits.  Easy to use, delivers full-duplex voice quality and is also fully interoperable with other PC based VoIP providers. You can chat with your friends and family wherever they are on their mobile handset, regular phone and PC at no extra costs. www.fring.com

It is quite possibly a violation of service according to T-mobile and others; but it is an interesting, innovative idea. I don't know how "free" makes money, but I guess there's people out there who can do it. Very fascinating. It's nice to see people thinking innovatively about commuinications.

pointless in UK as you'd pay far more for the 3G data than a normal call.
