Opera have released an updated version of their popular HTML/WML browser. They have added a couple of nice features earlier found only in the PC version.

Opera for Symbian Sony Ericsson P800 P900Opera Mobile Accelerator is a commercial subscription service offered. It will minimize the amount of data transferred to the device. A 14 days trial service is offered for free and demonstrates the advantage of the service. If you are using the Opera mainly on web pages, and not WAP pages, Opera claims up to 50%-70% bandwidth reduction. The service is simple. You set up the browser to use Opera's proxy server, which compress pages per request.

It works like this: You send a request (to the proxy, invisible to end user) for a web page, the proxy fetch the page before returning a compressed version to the Opera client on the phone.

Three subscription plans are available. 3 months for 113 NOK ($12.93), 6 months 189 NOK ($20.69) and 12 months 283 NOK ($30.17).

You will need to upgrade to version 6.31 to be able to use Opera Mobile Accelerator.

Other new features found in version 6.31 are:

  • Default homepage is updated. Now with links to Opera news, Opera software, Connect to Internet, Opera community and Getting started.
  • Better page zooming. 50%-150% adjustable using a slider
  • Search internet menu (using Google)
  • Possibility to exit Opera manually (earlier done by the operating system)
