The Domino Phone

29 May 2007 by axxxr
The Domino Phone, a concept piece from Stockholm-based Syntes Studio, juxtaposes old-world gaming and high-tech utility.

this exercise in sampling features from the world of old game play into mobile phone design, aimed at adding emotions to square shaped devices – a clear example of storytelling through design.

Turning the tide of sameness

For this intellectual journey the Syntes Studio team explored the process of transferring well-known concepts from the world of old gaming into hi-tech products. In the mobile phone industry, the convergence factor is rapidly changing our perception of communication. Yet the expression of the device itself has gone through little change during the same period in time.

Through relevant design touch points – numbering, materials, packaging, out-of-the-box experiences, naming, all the way to the well-known bone shape, the aspiration is to generate disruption in the market convention. Imagine if you will, which mobile services could add relevant and memorable user experiences to the Domino phone? Most likely, mobile operator X marketing department would have a fun job with this device!

Storytelling through design

Whether this is a feasible design for a mobile phone operator or merely a play with whimsical ideas, who knows? One thing, however, remains clear; the Domino phone would boldly differentiate itself from the silvery mass products in mobile phone stores. For us that is interesting enough! source:coolhunting
