Of all 220 mobile phones that play music in the UK, ten key models account for almost half of mobile music consumption, Sony Ericsson handsets account for 6 out of the Top 10.

M:Metrics, the mobile market authority, today released for the first time its figures on the mobile music market. The firm found that ownership of musicphones (defined as phones that are capable of music storage and playback) is growing rapidly across the United States and Western Europe. The UK boasts the highest penetration of these devices, at 40 percent, followed by Germany (34 percent), Italy (32 percent), Spain (29 percent) and France (23 percent). While the United States lags these markets, with only 17 percent, or 33 million, of mobile subscribers owning a musicphone, it has shown impressive growth in the past year: a 385 percent increase from January 2006 to January 2007.

"There are plenty of musicphones which can play music, but a small handful of these, designed and marketed specifically for music playback, is accelerating awareness and interest in hybrid phone/music players," said Jen Wu, analyst, M:Metrics. "Predictably, music activity is considerably higher on music-focused phones: for example, 67 percent of Sony Ericsson W850i owners in the UK listen to sideloaded music on their phone, compared with only 28 percent of overall musicphone owners in the UK." source:mmetrics

The result is not very surprising - considering the amount of music phones from SE and Nokia:

SE has few top-selling music phones - but nothing else. Nokia has a huge range of music capable phones but only some of them true top-sellers (e.g. N73).

Nokia's cumulative amount of sold music phones exceed SE's.

I wonder why n91 didnot get a score....its the music oriented n series.
I am a big fan of SE until mobile-review.com reviewed w950 and n91. I am pleased with the performace of n91 when it comes to music quality. Walkman users should give it a try. You will see the diffence. Got this fones to give credibility of my statement. w900i, k800i, m600i, p990i and finally, n91i ( 8 gig ) with a2dp support.

dear Marc,

its a same that your life is so disapointing, maybe it's because you don't own a walkman phone. we all know you want one. maybe the price is a bit to high for your budget! we all know you still are calling with a Nokia 3310, and your comment about the walkman phone is lacking of volume. thats still beter than no volume!

but i like to vote:

who like to give MARC a real SE walkman phone?

*so MARC can have a nice summer!

So typically you Dogmann, at least the SE fanatics don't take random cheap shots at Nokia forums. Hope you succeed in whatever it is you're trying to achieve. Till then, get a life. Go SE!

SE phones are the best music oriented phones in the market. i have tried the nokias and samsungs but they are really below in the music dept where sony reigns.

Very interesting considering so many here complain about various issues with their Walkman branded phones lacking in volume, hissing or other such problems. Obviously as the W handsets are marketed so heavily as Walkman phones and SE has so many of them to gain market share lots of guliable members of the public buy them and only listen to Music occasionally and can't be that interested in quality Music or even unaware of what it really is. Of course i will now be slated as an SE hater but the truth hurts SE fanatics at least.
