Sony Ericsson, Apple, DELL, and five other technology companies have been dragged into the huge court case over Bluetooth patents.

The case is being bought by a non-profit organisation connected to the University of Washington against Matsushita, Samsung and Nokia.

Other defendants since added include Logitech, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba and Plantronics. With names like these involved, it is clear that if the Washington Research Foundation wins, it could bring down the wireless technology industry.

So far the foundation, which has generated more than $150 million for the University of Washington, is asking for money damages and a court order barring the sale of products that use the patented technology.

The court action is targeted at products with chips made by the British outfit CSR, which the group says is using its Bluetooth technology without permission. Those based on Broadcom technology, which paid for a licence from the Foundation, will not be touched. more here source:theinquirer

Yet another case of the flawed patent law at work.

There's endless cases now, of some scummy 'Idea factory' that petents theoretical and 'concepts', without spending the time and effort to make it into a real world usable technology.

They just file thousands of these patents, then patiently wait until some big company (need to be rich enough) came up with the same solution (but actually made it work).

Then SUE for millions.

Evil evil institutes, sometimes these type of case prevent and delay the spread of essentailly important technology and halts the advancement in development.

US and international petent laws need to be torn to shreds and burned in fires of hell.

just want to ask the people behind the filing of the case if they were using nokia,SE, logitech or any brands that uses bluetooth as of now? this is insanity! years have passed since i saw bluetooth phones like P800,T68,7650 and 6310 and after those years here is the university filing case against the giants.

Well, some idot(s) have created an idiotic situation that they are most likely to loose.

And again a "non profit organisation" will be making a profit.

The Bluetooth specification was developed in 1994 by Sven Mattisson and Jaap Haartsen, who were working for Ericsson Mobile Platforms in Lund, Sweden.[2] The specifications were formalized by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG). The SIG was formally announced on May 20, 1998. Today it has over 6000 companies worldwide. It was established by Ericsson, Sony Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Toshiba, and Nokia, and later joined by many other companies. Bluetooth is also known as IEEE 802.15.1

they can't bring down bluetooth. all phones have restrictions when sending copyrighted material, so what's the problem if i want to send a picture taken with a mobile to my friend's mobile?

What a waste of time. Let the manufacturers be - they should be grateful that they are using their technology to start with. Just because the technology has boomed and is making lots of profit, they have decided to "have an interest" in it and start the whole case.

It's a bloody university for goodness sake - it's highly unlikely that they will win against all of the huge manufacturers out there.

Another money grabbing move by some University. When will they learn that open source is the way to go.

Fair enough this "non profit" organisation is seeking damages but then they will have made a profit and should be penalised accordingly. Its not good enough to try and bring down such companies and then give the cash away to some over subscribed university.

It disgusts me that the outcome of all cases are always based around cash.....how about just making the companies cease using the technology if they are that petty!
