Sony today confirmed what the market has spoken of the last couple of weeks. The buyout of Ericsson from the 50-50% joint venture

Sony Ericsson without Ericsson. Sony to buy out Ericsson

Ericsson is out of the partnership and Sony Ericsson will be a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony. Ericsson will receive 1.05 billion in cash for their half of the company. Just one week ago, analysts thought the price for Ericsson share would be close to 1.07 billion. They didn't miss much. The transaction also provides Sony with a broad intellectual property (IP) cross-licensing agreement covering all products and services of Sony as well as ownership of five essential patent families relating to wireless handset technology. Sony has TV, computers, gaming devices and tablets in its portfolio but it has, until now, been missing smartphones.

The brand name will most likely be changed from Sony Ericsson to Sony and the deal will make it possible for Sony to use some of their well know brand names for future devices. More power can be used to market the Xperia Play as a PlayStation mobile for example. LG and Samsung are two other companies that has used common features across platforms such as TV and Mobile. The buyout is an excellent chance for Sony to bring further PlayStation games to the Android platform.

Do you think we will see a significant change in Sony Ericsson products after the Sony buyout?

I liked the name Sony Ericsson ... sounded better then only Sony.
Ericsson had also very good Nordic image.
But it is past lets hope Sony will do everything to justify it,they have all at home so no excuses.
Good luck!

They will not. A new name for Sony's mobile division will be announced soon. A task force has been set up to come up with a new name

...and after millions of $ will be spent... they will finally announce the new name... Sony Mobile Phone Division.

No. It will be like Vaio, Cybershot, Handycam, Bravia, Alpha, Walkman, Playstation, etc. A separate sub brand.

Why bother coming up with a new name when the XPERIA brand already exists?
Bonovox12 years, 5 months ago
Xperia is a cool & original name!!
Anyway,Sony Mobile could be a name maybe??
adsada12 years, 5 months ago
yeah but isn't XPERIA a series brand? like with vaio laptops they have the C, E, F series etc. I suppose that they are going to focus only on the smartphone segment, but still would seem a little strange. 'Check out the new Sony XPERIA smartphones'
Hmmm maybe I could warm to the idea, I would like it if they make ericsson the sub brand name and thus changing nothing Yes unlikely, but they that name does have a good following of fans so why remove it!

Possible, bit boring though like if they named all their products 'Sony Laptop', 'Sony Camera', 'Sony Tablet' . Maybe they could incorporate the awesome as sony's logo in general. Yeah stupid suggestion but....

Yeah I see your point

i really hope that we get a statement from ericsson regarding their next steps
in sweden people are probably celebrating this day on the streets
it would be really really sad to loose another european mobile brand
these days it doesn't take that much to bring a handset to the market (amazon)
i personally decided 3 years ago that i will never buy a sony product again (i didn't count sony ericsson)
nokia here i come ?... we will see
masseur12 years, 5 months ago
I think Ericssons next steps will be to stop making phones with Sony and simply continue with what they are already doing elsewhere.
they certainly won't be making mobile phones.
adsada12 years, 5 months ago
Yeah I'm sure they'll roll around in their 1 billion pounds for a while

this would be the obvious decision, yes
but there are still a lot of people in sweden that want ericsson to build phones
things get a little complex here, but its also in the interest of the european union to have a strong independent smartphone brand. they already tried to set up an independent search engine, but the company was bought by microsoft.
so there are some interesting times a head

So? VAIO is a brand. So are Walkman, Cybershot, Alpha, Bravia, and Playstation. The brands happen to also act as the marketing name for various division within Sony (although Sony's imaging division gets two brands). It makes sense to just keep/adopt the XPERIA name as the marketing name/brand for the mobile division.

Really a very sad day
NightBlade12 years, 5 months ago
Agreed. Xperia seems like a logical brand name for the new division, considering that it has gained some consumer recognition over the years and the fact that they've stated that they won't be producing any more feature phones.
Soo their next phone might be the (Sony) XPERIA Duo/Nozomi/Konichiwa/Whatever.
Bonovox12 years, 5 months ago
If they changed Xperia name it's just going to confuse people again The average consumer anyway.
adsada12 years, 5 months ago
I still honestly believe that most people thought Sony Ericsson was already Sony, I know I've said this before but it's so true.
Actually a thought just occurred to me, did Sony spend 1bn on patents alone? Because surely the cheaper option would be for both partners to step back and leave the JV that way, when they bought Ericsson out what else did they get?
echo.shane12 years, 5 months ago
this explains why there force xperia blog to close the domain. this is bullsiht if they change from sony ericsson to ericsson. what am i going to do? where am i going to work in the future? whats gonna become of xperia. im so gonna cry . this feels like when concorde died
my lovely x10 my p1i omg. all the lovely design will stop.
im hoping the best for sony. idk i just love the name sony ericsson and the liquid logo im going to sleep
