PDA with Detachable Mobile Phone

11 April 2007 by axxxr
A Patent has been filed for a PDA with detachable mobile phone housed in the back.

With an increasing amount of different electronic devices incorporated into a single device, the PDA will become too large to stow in a breast pocket when only the mobile phone portion is required.

This handheld electronic device contains all the functions of a conventional PDA as described above with the inclusion of a detachable mobile phone. The small mobile phone device is housed in a recess provided on the back panel of the PDA. The recess is equipped with a mechanical link to keep the phone docked and an electrical connection by which data on the PDA can be synchronized with that of the detachable phone.

Once detached, the small handheld mobile phone is powered by its own internal battery and contains the basic function buttons to, for example answer calls, type text messages and scroll through telephone numbers stored in its memory. Once docked into the PDA, the mobile's battery is charged by that of the PDA or an external charger, which is plugged into the power mains. source:IOL Patent Page

Anyone who thinks this is a good idea, is clearly an idiot. Who is going to wake up one morning and say "Should I take my PDA or just the Mobile Phone with me" when leaving the house?. Durrrrrr. "I wish to see this device in Pakistan" - why? You got nothing better to look at?

this looks like an excellent patent to earn money when Apple decides to provide a dock in an Apple Tablet or Notebook for the iPhone in order to provide datatransfer and internet connectivity.

there was a time when phone manufacturers rushed their butts in coming up with a device that COMBINES most of our everyday gadgets in one powerhouse device... i guess history just reversed itself this time...

Whats the point? I always need my PDA (TyTn) with me. I never leav without it.

I love this idea and it could be explored further.... You could have a PDA that also has detachable camera and mp3 device as well. Maybe far into the future there will be a PSP like version as well?

A very outdated idea - the best modern smartphones are already matching larger PDA's for features, and are portable enough to be in your pocket 24/7 - why would anyone want to switch back to a PDA combined with a much dumber phone? Even if you HAD to have a PDA, you can always use bluetooth to easily sync with your choice of separate handset, without having to muck around with a contraption like this.

I think this is a great idea. If it is done right that could be a cool alternative.
