Norwegian broadcaster launches mobile TV

17 June 2004 by axxxr
The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) launched a live TV channel, with television news and video clips, on their mobile portal Wednesday.

NRKNRKs solution supports 3GP which is the standard for mobile TV. That enables mobile phones with video support to show NRK1 and NRK programmes without installation of a player.

The service is carrier independent and works on all networks, including GPRS, UMTS and EDGE. NRK worked with Nokia throughout the development of its mobile TV.

Norwegian firm Rubberduck Media Lab (RDML) delivered the technical platform in co-operation with Nextreaming from Korea.

NRK does not charge for its mobile TV. Users will however be charged for traffic according to the various operators’ price schemes - an average of €0.40 per minute.

I have tested the service and found GPRS connection too slow for any good video quality. The sound quality is good, but the image update frequency is poor. The service is obviously targeted at 3G devices but NRK is offering it for free now because they want to test their system. The following devices are supported: Nokia 6230, 6600, 7200, 7600, 7610, N-Gage QD, Sony Ericsson P800, P900, K700 and Siemens CX65

Welcome screen. Choose between "Live" (streaming), "News" (stremaing) and downloadable clipsNews reporterNews from Belgium

You can try it yourself by going to the wap site wap.nrk.no and click "NRK mobil-TV". (only access with supported phones)
