Nokia sold a little over 400,000 phones in a single day in India; the most it has ever sold in a single day anywhere in the world.

The company’s previous single day sales record was about one 100,000 phones. This is the kind of sales its competitors generally do over the entire year in India.

“It is even more than what Nokia has ever sold on any Chinese new year," says a dealer who has seen an Nokia internal communiqué on this matter.

India recently celebrated its new year along with Eid and Diwali (the festival of lights) and this is supposed to explain the sudden boom in sales. Ironically most of the sales came from the entry level low budget handsets which Nokia did not want to get into initially due to the lower profit margins.

“India is a volumes market and everybody is focusing on this low-end segment," said one of Nokia’s top officials. He requested not to be named because Nokia is an unlisted company in India and does not declare its sales numbers. source:indiatimes

But the phones mostly sold costs between Rs2000-5000(1$=Rs45).Those costing 2000rs are B&W basic phones with only call and text facilities...While those costing 5000rs have radio and a colour screen... the profit margin from each phone for nokia is 6-8%.
