Technical details:
This week Nokia released Nokia Belle, a major update of the the previously named Symbian operating system.

Nokia Belle Update available for download to C6-01, C7, N8, E6, E7, X7, Nokia 500 and Oro

Nokia Belle is the latest version of the Symbian Belle operating system. Nokia abandoned the Symbian name in December last year. The operating system is pre-installed on a couple of entry-level smartphones launched last year. At the same time the Nokia 600, Nokia 700 and Nokia 701 was announced, Nokia also promised the Belle update for existing handsets. That day has come, and Nokia is now making a Belle update available for the following handsets: Nokia N8, E7, X7, C6-01, C7 and Nokia Oro. Nokia 500 will receive the update on a later date.

The update process is almost straightforward. Because of the size of the update, it is not possible to update over the air. Users must install the 87 MB large Nokia Suite, connect the device to the PC before the Suite automatically downloads and install the Belle update. Most unlocked phones can install the update right away, but operator locked devices might have to wait a little longer. Nokia has made a Rollout Status page where users can check if their device are ready for update.

The most exciting new feature in the Nokia Belle update are

  • Six homescreens
  • Live Widgets selectable in size
  • A notification bar just like Android users are used
  • NFC support. If the phone has NFC chip built in (Nokia C7). Tap to share services
The Symbian platform is at the end of its lifetime. Nokia earlier this month said that only one more Symbian Nokia Belle model will be announced by the Finnish company. It will be an update to the Nokia N8 which had excellent camera capabilities. Maybe Mobile World Congress in two weeks is the last Symbian announcement from Nokia ever. We will be there to tell. Two models are rumoured to be the N8 successor. One is the Nokia 803 with a bulky look or Nokia 801 with similar body as the N9 and Lumia series.

What are the improvements in this new update?

You have things like moveable resizable widgets,a new drop down notification bar like Android. You can put all sorts of shortcuts on screen like a contact or bookmarks. It's all very much like Android now even critics liked it. It is very good and a huge improvement

There are no resizable widgets in Belle, they were stated as one of the new features but have not made it to the final release unfortunately

Also has a new browser better than the Anna version. Only thing I don't like is Nokia's qwerty keyboard it's just too small the keys

The N8 feels right after Belle. It should have been there from day 1..
With Belle, the N8 is a pretty good deal.. $335 unlocked on amazon

$270 is a great deal The keypad is small, but text prediction works very well (at least when typing in English) and also, you can get swype from beta labs

i tried swype and it was good comparatively with the stock one. anyway will be nothing infront of android keyboards thats sad part.
