Quick test of Samsung SPH-M8000 WiMAX phone
1 2 Next ->
Samsung had four WiMAX phones available for visitors to test. I took a quick look to see what a WiMAX call was all about. The connected phones acts as clients and requires a WiMAX server within 1 kilometre distance. I am not sure how you add new devices to your list of phones, but all phones I saw was setup and was a part of the same group. All group members receive your “call” when you press the dedicated send button. It’s like talking with a walkie talkie. Video of and voice from the sender is broadcasted to the other members of a group. The new thing here is the transfer of living picture.

The phones on display were very hot. They might be prototypes and not ready for production yet and they was constantly connected to a charger. On the other hand: 90% of the new phones at CeBIT is prototypes and also need charging. Non of the other phones I tried was this hot. I do not know if this has anything to do with WiMAX feature. Hopefully not.

SPH-M8000 is a slider model Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone with Push-to-all, video telephony, Bluetooth, 1.3 Megapixels camera and a VGA front camera. The maximum download rate is 3 Mbps while 1Mbps is the upload rate.

. Blu-ray, i3, HDMI out for under $600. Of course there will be fatesr machines for less in 6 months but all I do is surf, read blogs, trade stocks, do all my bills and finance etc. so this machine is over kill for what I do. I'll buy something else(whatever that will be) in 5 years. IMHO, the best looking laptop too!

For all of you who would like to experience a VoIP WiMax community there is a resort just outside Vancouver Canada installing a complete WiMax network for all of its guests. If you are a guest at The Falls Resort Community you will receive a WiMax VoIP phone like the Samsung SPH-M8000 during your stay. The Falls (www.thefalls.com) is now open and over $100M are going into the development of this resort which will be completed by 2010. Please see our website us to book your next visit.
