P990 showing very cool features

Today I went to the Sony Ericsson stand a little early to avoid the most crowded hours. It seems like many of the manufacture representative you meet are hired directly from the street and just briefed shortly about one particular phone model. This was not the case today with Joseph from Sony Ericsson. He spotted that I was from Esato and offered me a demonstration of a couple of cool features found in the Sony Ericsson P990. The P990 is the new high-end business model from Sony Ericsson available in June. It has WLAN, 3G, touch screen and runs Symbian OS. Browsing full HTML pages in landscape mode using Opera is nice, the email client is elegant but what caught my eyes today were two things:
The new spell checker and the business card scanner application.

Typing text on the P990 can be done in three ways. Either with the stylus pointing at the virtual keyboard, using the stylus and handwriting recognition or using the keyboard below the display. The Business Card Scanner (BCS) application was breath taking. It was still under development, but after a hard reset of the phone I saw an impressive demo. First you capture a picture of the business card. The BCS analyze the photo and magically adds all vital scanned text to the correct filed in the phone book. Considering that no business card have the same layout or font, I is a difficult task to figure out which line of text should be placed in the Name, Title, Address, Email or Web fields. The BCS managed it all. It even recognized a Norwegian character in my last name. In addition to the recognized text, the application also saves the business card image with the contact data.

The second cool feature demonstrated was how the new spell checker works. The demo phone was set up to recognize German and English at the same time. Joseph started typing "Dear " using the stylus with handwriting recognition. The P990 responded with inserting "Sir" as a suggestion to the next word in the sentence. After clicking on "Sir", a space was automatically inserted, and the next word "and" was typed. To finish off, P990 suggested "Madam" as the final word when this was typed in "Dear Sir and ". It did not need the "M" to suggest "Madam". Impressive

As a former P910i user I was suprised with how many technical and asthetic improvements had been made, as soon as these bad boys are available in the UK I will definately be heading to the shops.
