BT develops 'face-to-face' technology for mobile video

23 July 2004 by axxxr
BT has developed a mobile video face-centring technology that not only guarantees a high-resolution image, but also keeps faces firmly in the picture.

BT's technology and IT operations division, BT Exact, has developed a mobile video face-centring technology that automatically stabilises facial images, eliminating the motion effect, while also keeping the face in the centre of the screen.

The new technology will enable people to conduct video conferencing even whilst on the move.

The company has also created other methods of delivering accurate, well-framed images over mobile phones including an indirect feedback view control, helping the user to position his or her face in the camera's image by distorting the image of the other person on the call. BT Exact is also working on smart black-and-white video conferencing that doesn't need the 3G bandwidth, but still lets you see the caller's expression.

Ian Kegel from BT Exact's future content group said: "While all the infrastructure around 3G phones is firmly in place and the devices themselves are becoming more and more sophisticated, we found that the visual aspect of communicating via a face-to-face mobile video call had much room for improvement."     www.bt.com/btexact
