First to Offer 8-Gigabyte Memory Stick Micro (M2) Cards For Mobile Phones

31 August 2007 by Olav Hellesø-Knutsen

SanDisk today announed that it will start shipping 8 GB M2 cards later this year. SanDisk will be the first company offering 8GB size.

SanDisk Corporation today announced that it is shipping 8-gigabyte (GB) Memory Stick Micro™ (M2) flash memory cards to phone manufacturers and mobile network operators (MNOs) for testing and evaluation purposes. Primarily used in Sony Ericsson mobile phones, the 8GB SanDisk M2 cards are ideal for the growing number of consumers who make their mobile phone—with its built-in music player, digital camera and video player/recorder—the centerpiece of their digital lifestyle.

At 8GB, SanDisk offers the largest capacity M2 card in the world. The new card will allow consumers to listen to more than 2,000 digital songs, or store more than 5,000 high-resolution pictures, or up to 5 hours of high-quality MPEG 4 videos . The announcement was made at IFA, the world's largest consumer electronics show, where SanDisk is exhibiting at Booth 130, in Hall 15.1 of Messe Berlin, through Sept. 5.

By contrast, Sony announced their largest M2 capacity card in July this year. The size is 2GB and should be available from September. Sony plans to launch a 4GB version later this autumn.

SanDisk 8GB M2 Memory Card"With the addition of an 8GB SanDisk M2 card, consumers will instantly have the same amount of storage as the largest capacity iPhone," said Jeff Kost, senior vice president and general manager of the Mobile Consumer Solutions division at SanDisk. "Furthermore, removable cards make it easy to share content you create with friends, ‘sideload’ content and files from a computer and have virtually unlimited storage by simply purchasing more cards. SanDisk is enabling people to get more out of their phones than ever before."

Retail release of the cards and availability to phone manufacturers and network operators is planned for Q4 2007. Pricing has not yet been determined.

In addition to its Memory Stick Micro M2 cards, SanDisk also offers a broad range of both embedded and removable storage solutions for mobile handset manufacturers and mobile network operators. These include iNAND™ and mDOC™ embedded flash drives and microSD™, microSDHC™, miniSD™ and MegaSIM™ cards.

SanDisk is the original inventor of flash storage cards and is the world's largest supplier of flash data storage card products, using its patented, high-density flash memory and controller technology. SanDisk is headquartered in Milpitas, Calif., and has operations worldwide, with more than half its sales outside the U.S.

And, suddenly, the W960's 8 Gigabytes aren't so impressive.

NightBlade on Aug 31 2007

Right nightblade. w910 would be the real winner now imho. I wish SE would introduce a model with the 3.5 jack. nokia has too many now. n81, n91, n95, the new express music. too bad SE.

"And, suddenly, the W960's 8 Gigabytes aren't so impressive."

hahaha, got that right. but it also makes the k850, provided it is supports the new disk, a little bit sweeter now. 5mp cybershot phone with 8gb storage. suweeet!!!

"And, suddenly, the W960's 8 Gigabytes aren't so impressive."

though still W960 is the ultimate walkman :)

SeF on Sep 01 2007

How come??Both have Walkman version 3...with this card, both will have 8gb memory.
Only difference are camera and uiq3.1(these r user preferences...i prefer a non smartphone till they sort out their UIQ bugs)

jumbo on Sep 01 2007

erm.. what?.. UIQ bugs?... the only problems with UIQ3 were that it's memory intensive and the P990's RAM wasn't enough to cope. the P1i and W960 with have 128mb (upgrade from 20mb to 80mb after booting) which is more than enough :)

"And, suddenly, the W960's 8 Gigabytes aren't so impressive"

well at least that comes with the phone instead of being an xpensive addition :)

Gerry on Sep 01 2007

"well at least that comes with the phone instead of being an xpensive addition :)"

well at least you can upgrade the storage of the k850 to match what the w960 has. Can you upgrade the camera of the w960 to match what the k850 has? wink wink

erotomaniac on Sep 02 2007

no, they cant... but anyone whose that interest in photography and needs that kind of storage isn't going to buy a W960 anyways :)

the 3MP cam on the W960 (and P1i) will be similar to the K800/810 so it's not that much of a compromise.

the reality is that the perfect phone doesnt exist, so we have to shop for the clostest thing. i like touchscreen smartphones so i would compromise a lower res cam for UIQ3 and touch screen. also, the fact that it's a music phone makes it all the better.

Gerry on Sep 03 2007

ehh.... if i not mistake, for now there still arent any phone that support 8GB memory upgrade. so ....... i think W960 still impressive for me

truewor on Sep 04 2007

Well sony should launch it's product early to capture the market.

Mickey on Sep 04 2007

will it work on z550i i am using 1 gb m2 with it

shashi on Sep 04 2007

VERY GOOD SITE

FATHI on Sep 05 2007

Well finally, memory card sizes are getting reasonable. Will be testing this card in a week or so. iphone?

below24 on Sep 05 2007

how much would an 8gb m2 cards cost? if its less than a hundred AU$ that be great... if not i'd wait

jayxem on Sep 07 2007

like all memory, it'll be expensive at first untill it becomes mainstream. i'd imagine it's be around AU$.150-200 (€75-100 or £50-70). give it anothe 6 months and these will be much much cheaper.

Gerry on Sep 07 2007

What is the price?

NayaabAKhan on Sep 13 2007

Wont this lag your phone (k800/810)?

ano on Sep 14 2007
