Sony Ericsson has Patent before Apple iphone7 February 2007 by axxxr
The screen on the iPhone was one of the most exciting features. To see it automatically rotate as you changed the handsets angle was magical, now it seems Sony Ericsson had the idea years ago. The patent appears to be discussing the method by which an images could be dynamically resized and rotated rather than the technology behind the orientation sensors. The key statement is in the diagram below. "A single display can be used, for example in portrait mode while terminal functions are being used and in landscape mode while imaging functions are being used. The change between the two orientations can be accomplished automatically. In some embodiments, the capability is also provided to process an image for assignment to a terminal function, where the image has at least one display attribute that makes it at least partly unsuitable for use with the terminal function. The processing may include resizing, cropping, and/or rotating the image. This processing can be accomplished for example, so that a landscape image can be viewed conveniently in a portrait orientation." source:mad4mobilephones Complete Patent

all of a sudden sony ericsson is starting to shine. 1st was the N93 style now apple iPhone

SE should sue Apple fast! They should not let themselves be outshone.
Ashlars on Feb 08 2007
Ha! I think SE have lost their way. The P800 really was the first all-screen phone, but the P990 is a mess. Suing Apple is not the way to outshine the iPhone; beating the iPhone on its own terms is. It's not beyond SE to make something like the LG Shine with UIQ. Too many dumb but pretty phones, and ugly but smart phones huh?

Then why does Apple have MULTIPLE patents for all technologies used in the iPhone that were granted to Apple more than 2yrs ago?

...the iphone saga continues...
sEfan on Feb 08 2007
Konica Minolta and Sony dSLR has already got this technology so it only a matter of time before SE put it inside mobile phone.
hanugro on Feb 08 2007
If they had the patent 2 years ago, why doesn't p990, w950, m600 has the technology? How long do we have to wait? A decade?

It'd be very hard to prove that Apple nicked this idea. It's a very obvious idea once you merge cameras & phones, and as someone else has pointed out, it's already occurring on other devices. You can't patent an idea, only a method or technology.

Sony-Ericsson had the idea and implemented it with a mechanical trigger (opening the flip for example) independent of the position of the device, landscape or not.
Apple's build in technology is using a microchip who will detect the position of the device and is not a mechanical detector, so no problems for Apple,..
Mac OS X is simply clever and does not have software bugs like most smartphone do :-D

Sue Apple!
Monkey09 on Feb 08 2007
As far as I know, Apple has not claimed they have a patent for this. Finnish MyDevice mobile phone had this same (automatic) functionality several years ago.
Finn on Feb 08 2007
I think suing apple is one thing but the major thing SE should focus now, is how to implement this technology that would beat the iPhone

bogdan1978buc,it's all about marketing

Apple doesn't need to worry. Having a P990i SE doesn't even know how to accept a phonecall using a button

Surely this feature has been in Canon Ixus cameras for years?
