ilkone is a new brand of mobile phone, conceived in the Middle East. The name ‘ilkone’ is driven from an Arab word meaning ‘universe’. ilkone utilizes advanced technology to provide total solutions for GSM mobile phones, and which provides greater efficiency, more relevant and personalized services and functions to mobile phone users.

Malaysia is set to be the base for the official launch of the world’s first mobile phone with unique Islamic applications in Asia.

Singapore-based Ilkone Asia Pte Ltd, which markets the product, said it was targeting to launch its flagship model in Malaysia by early July, Indonesia and Brunei at end-June and India, Bangladesh and Singapore in August.

“Malaysia will be our base for the Asian market, and if everything goes smoothly, we will launch the product there by next month,” said its marketing manager Ismail Abdullah when met at the company’s booth at CommunicAsia2004, Asia’s largest telecoms fair which ended here Friday. He said so far more than 10 distributors had been selected to market its product in Malaysia.

The product, he added, would have to go through various stages of approval - the Standards Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (Sirim), the Malaysian Department of Islamic Development or Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (Jakim) and the Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt.

The Ilkone i-800 was first introduced in Lebanon, then in Jordan, Syria, Sudan and Algeria. It will subsequently be introduced in Qatar, Bahrain and to other major Islamic regions such as Turkey, Iran and Pakistan.

The Ilkone i-800 provides automatic precise prayer times anywhere in the world. An alarm option can be set to sound before and after the call to prayer (Azan).
