i just noticed that when i use an mp3 as the ringtone, its much more lower quality compared to when i play that SAME mp3 using the built in media player. it doesnt sound awful.. but it certainly doesnt sound as good. why would SE do that?
anyone else notice this?
note: all playback is thru the built in speaker (not headphone). |

Perhaps because the media player is intended for listening to music with whereas the ringtone is just to let you know that someone is calling therefore quality really isn't that important, getting your attention is.
Just a guess... |

this mp3 ringtone thing is kinda bugging me tho..
i transferred an actual whole song (187kbps VBR) to my k750. played it thru media player and surprisingly awesome quality (quite impressive). so i set it as my ringtone.. then when i test called my phone, it doesnt sound as good! i also tried the same song converted to 128kbps AAC but it still doesnt play as well as on the media player. |

The media player and the ringer are two different systems inside the phone, with two obviously different purposes. I think that the sound goes through the speaker when playing the tune on the media player, while it goes through a ringer unit when it's a ring signal. The ringer unit is designed to deliver a loud sound while the speaker is optimized for sound quality. I have noticed a similar thing on my K700i; when previewing a ringtone while selecting it, the sound is not as loud as when the phone actually "rings", I haven't thought about the quality of the sound though. |

Just a guess... MP3s, when played using the media player is filtered with the equalizer... the ringtone isn't...
no Mega Bass when you use an MP3 file as a ringtone... |
