If the dangers of using mobile phones in petrol stations appear unfounded, why do retailers continue to warn motorists against using them? According to Burgess, mobile phone warnings developed as part of a global drive to increase safety in the late 1980’s. This was largely in response to the Piper-Alpha oil rig disaster just off the Scottish coast in 1988, in which 167 oil-workers lost their lives.
Despite scientific evidence to the contrary, countries around the world continue to caution customers about the dangers of using mobile phones in the vicinity of petrol pumps. This includes Australia, where petrol pumps display stickers that caution motorists to turn off their mobile phones while refuelling. Without any supportive evidence, however, such precautionary action raises the question as to why service stations continue to provide warnings against mobile phones.

Switching off phones while filling up does have a few advantages. 1. A few minutes without a stupid ringtone.
2. Not having to listen to the bloke tell wife/girlfriend that he's just filling up and will be home in 4mins.
3. Overhearing the what do you want for tea conversation.
I'm sure there's hundreds of reasons, but can't think of any safety related ones tho.... |

it was proven on brainiac that mobile phones don't affect the petrol inside the pumps. richard hammond and some brainiacs put lots of mobiles inside a caravan with loads of open tubs of petrol, and rang all the mobile at the same time and nothing happened!

i remember that one 
didnt some dumb american get killed because of a spark caused on the charger connectors?
or perhaps he has a fag in his mouth and talking on the phone made him drop it?

i had some bloke in work today gabbing on his phone in the petrol station 
he wouldnt switch it off either the idiot
there is a small chance of something happening even if it is very slim
he didnt want to listen so i was like fine blow us all up then

The thinking behind it is, if you drop your mobile phone in a petrol station there is a very small chance that the battery could cause a spark which could have dire consequences. I once read this in a petrol station. It is a very very small chance, surely any metal object falling could cause a spark !
Likewise you can't use a mobile in Hospitals in case it interferes with vital equipment, the BMA ruled that this was rubbish and it is apparently now at the hospitals descretion whether mobiles can be used. The Uk is one of the only countries that frowns upon mobiles in Hospitals.They obviosly make too much money off payphones to lift the ban! |

I doubt it was the mobile that caused the spark,just that the common dumb american must have have dropped his fag and blamed the phone.
Sparks can be caused by your a number of reasons,mobile phones are not one of them...Fires at petrol stations have been known to start from car keys being dropped on the forcourt and ignite a spark.

Petrol stations in NZ display warnings about mobile phones, despite no recorded incidence of a problem... however, Petrol companies have expressed concern about customers being distracted by thier phones and not paying attention to the potentially dangerous act of putting a flammable fuel into thier cars.
On that, I guess they have a point.

that have warnings here too.
i actually have had an experience with this...
once i was filling up while on my mobile, and the person that works there told me to get off over the little intrcom thing, and i didnt, and he actually turned the pump off until i got off of my phone.
only someone in the US could blow themselves up while on the phone pumping gas... lol

The busted that myth big time, and because they didn't manage to blow their home made gas-place up with the phone (the suprising part is that they used a Nokia and it still didn't blow up) they got frustrated, as they usually do when thing don't blow up. So they blew it up anyway.

There may be a risk if you use a Nokia with a dodgy battery (they tend to blow up) and the explotion could ignite the gasoline. But, meh, that would be like saying that: "If you walk in on a gas-station with your bomb and decides to blow it up, then the explotion could egnite the gas."
What I mean is that it's not dangerous to use a phone on a gas-station in normal cases...

The Hospital ban is a joke, my junior brother is a Clinical Psycologist in a massive inner city hospital, and they have "Do not use Mobile Phones in the Hospital Buildings, they can interfere with vital equiptment"
He laughs, as all the doctors and nurse use their phones in the wards etc, they keep the signs up, because they annoy the other patients and staff whilst they are trying to treat them.
The best bit is, if you are admited, the patients can get a "Hospital" mobile with a special PAYG sim, which is 'hospital approved'. It's a bog standard Nokia unit, and an O2 UK sim card. WHAT A CON, lol
He takes pics of horiffic injuries and MMS's them to me during the day to freak me out, as I hate guts and gore!
