What is GPRS?
I'm the lucky owner of a brand new R520m.
Cool phone, this is the closest I've been to a personally computer on a phone. (You know with custum background and all that)
It's got T9, long SMS', wap, GPRS, Backg...........GPRS?
What the #ell is GPRS?
I've heard that it should be some kind of fast wap, but I'm not sure at all.
Can any of you hardcore Sony Ericsson guys please tell me what GPRS is?
Thanks a lot for your help
Casper

GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Service. Basically it allows you to connect to the internet via your mobile or WAP with an always on service that you only pay for the data you download and upload and NOT the time you are connected. So for example you can have it connected to WAP 24/7 and only pay for eeach web/wap page you recieve. It is also alot faster than standard dial up wap and in most cases works out cheaper.
here's some more info:
How does GPRS work?
GPRS technology entails dividing data into small packages and transporting them separately. Using a GPRS mobile phone you are constantly online - as for a computer with a continuous connection to the Internet. GPRS is seen as an interim standard on the way from GSM to UMTS mobile telephony and is therefore called 2.5G for short. Just like HSCSD, GPRS builds on the existing GSM infrastructure.
Hope this helps,
Ed

IC - Thanks for your answer.
But does that mean that you can't see all web pages, but only the ones that support wap?
Or does it reach farther than that? |

On your phone you can only view WAP pages using GPRS but faster, always on and cheaper but if you use your phone as a modem via irda/btooth etc with a laptop you can view webpages. This is the case with the T68 but i would imagine the same with your new phone. Ed

Yes in a way it can be compared to broadband/adsl but for a phone, it is always on but its the data you are charged for. Ed

Some helpful info for Cingular users in the US:
Wireless Internet Express
Wireless Internet Express allows you to customize the information you want to see through the My Wireless Window portal. Also, provides GPRS Internet browsing, so you can enjoy faster speeds. Plus, you don't pay for the time you use the service, just for the amount of data you send and receive. No more logging off the Internet to answer your calls. Now, you can switch between data and voice sessions without losing your connection.
~~~
They offer this feature for $6.99 a month. Bleh. I'd stick to my *free* WAP. FREE is always good!
