buzz lightyear in the background is not included! lol. Seeing as a decent DVD player is £200-300 and this laptop is £800 or there abouts its an absolute bargain!

I change laptops every 12-18 months and am now on my 5th vaio in a row, a Vaio VGN-S3XP, since Sony starting making them. The Vaos are great and my whole family have Vaios and wouldn't have anything else. Rarely a problem and the couple of times I have Sony picked it up on Monday, shipped it to Europe, fixed it and had it back to my by Thursday or Friday and all part of standard warranty
before that I had laptops since 386 processor from all sorts including an early acer, HP and also an AST which had a Pentium II 300mhz processor and was my first with a DVD player

I've had an Acer Travelmate for about 6 years and it's still going strong. I don't have much need for a laptop so, despite being a P3 500Mhz, it still fits my needs now but when I do upgrade, I'll probably get another Acer.
Sony Vaios are quite robust, I've never had one in the shop with a hardware problem (yet!) but I'm told the battery life is not too brilliant.
HP, e-machines and Packard Bell (well, the 'pc world' varieties since they often appear under different brand names) I wouldn't touch with a barge pole, awfull bloody laptops. If it doesn't go wrong for a whole year you're doing really well.
Dells are OK, similar to Vaios in terms of reliability but don't go for the cheapest option, you get what you pay for with Dell.
One thing I would mention, don't be swayed by the whole 'Intel Centrino wireless technology' thing. They're power hungry! If you do need wireless access get a wireless adapter of some kind, it does the job just as well and you're not paying for hyped-up Intel crap.
There's some very nice mobile Athlon 64 systems coming out soon
