Instead of concentrating in making beautiful icons, I would concentrate FIRST in creating intuitive icons.
Here some rules.
1. Think about what the button does.
2. That is the image that comes to your mind?
3. Think about synonyms that apply.
4. Use the Google image search engine. Ask for SMALL images!
http://www.google.com/advance[....]&imgsz=icon&svnum=10&hl=en&lr=
Example:
The Refresh button. Synonym: Reload!
Results for refresh:
http://www.google.com/images?[....]hl=en&lr=&imgsz=icon&q=refresh
Results for Reload:
http://www.google.com/images?[....]&hl=en&lr=&imgsz=icon&q=reload
Pretty impressive hein?
5. Now save the best images to a folder, and create one that fits your style, so all icons fit a image single style.
Have fun!

@gardar
You are starting with the wrong foot here
Are you sure you can create a "Flush" icon or a "Compress Heap" icon using the same style of those? (how good are you at drawing?)
If you can not replicate other people's icon styles, don't start using theirs. You will hang the moment you need an icon not in the list.
Also, don't forget you probably have to convert those to less colours and resolution. I'm not sure how many colors SMan uses (16?)

I agree with _LAU_ in a way. Intuitive icons are the first priority. But if you can make them pretty too, then go for it! |

no, I say make icons that all look like diffent dinosaurs. But make them so its hard to click as the position is all off, so its like a game.
Then make 2 icons that do totally different things look the same. I would recommend flush tasks and the refresh button.
I shall post more crazy ideas as I have them.
