Sorry to start a new thread on this. Not sure which of the 4000 other threads on Orange and upgrade to post this to. Those waiting for an official orange upgrade will be seriously dissapointed, I received this today in regard to the T68m->t68i upgrade (I removed the names). I know I can probably get it done somewhere anyway but that is not the point.

Incidently anyone know if a service center can tell that a phone is locked to a specific network during the upgrade process? If I send my phone to Celestica and tell them I am on Cellnet how would they know I was lying given that I would retain the SIM and the phone has no Orange makings on it?
-----------------------------------------

Thank you for your mail.

I can confirm that Orange phones are supplied with Orange software
rather than the software supplied by the manufacturer. I can confirm
that we are not able to upgrade that software.

I hope this information assists you.

Kind Regards

Ring ericsson and they will tell u where the service centre nearest to u is ring them and they will do it free. Some service centres won't do orange though because they say they haven't got the software to overwrite orange.I think the nearest to u is in slough and i know they won't do it cause they refused to mine cause i was on orange and i had to go to one i was near up north.

bobahiom,

Thanks anayway but I know I can get it done if I look around (I can visit the one in Pocklington when next in York/try Next Communicationsin Southampton!). The point is that Orange should provide an official path to upgrade the phone as it was originally sold as MMS compatible. I would rather not run the risk of invalidating my Orange care (but will if absolutly neccesary). I intend to persue Orange until all necessary avenues of official upgrade (& complaint) are exhausted.

I just wondered if a services center could tell if the phone was on Orange given the fact there are no logos on it.

I'm not quite sure about this, but if there are no logos on your phone, it's possible it's one of the very early Orange ones. I got mine from an Orange shop the day it came out on Orange (3rd Jan as far as I remember). It has no logos, and I've got a feeling these were standard phones with a manky Orange wallpaper stuck on them. I got it upgraded in the CPW no problem. I don't have Orange care, but I don't think it'll invalidate it. Best to read the small print though.

Good luck.

the upgrade is part of the SE warranty so there should be no issue in upgradin it !

@ShibbyLicious : CPW are still (as with most places) under orders from Orange NOT to perform FW upgrades on Orange T68m phones. Sorry

@bobahiom : Have you tried phoning SE for service centre info recently? I tried yesterday and got a fifteen minute grilling about why I needed to know, what phone I had, what network, what my problem was, then they had to confirm if new FW would fix it, etc, etc. I somehow suspect if you phone up and say "Hi, I want to upgrade my Orange T68m", they'll more than likely tell you it's not possible before you can get another word out!

Sorry to sound so negative, but I'm getting more and more wound up about this each day. Orange have no right to do this, yet no one seems capable of stopping them..... I have an SE phone with an SE warranty, but, oh look, SE have rolled over to have their belly tickled by lovable Orange.......

Nightwind: You are not the only one wound up. I am not giving up on an upgrade though. I am positive Orange had this phone marked as useable with 'multimedia message services' on their website, as many online retailers still do (relating to Orange phones), as does the SonyEriccson website (via firmware upgrade). Unfortuanely Orange have changed their website and I have no proof on that front.

inflexion: Are you saying an SE service center can tell what network you are on from the IMEI number - If so - bugger, I was going to try a SE servcide center on Saturday to get the upgrade. Not sure whether to bother given it is 30 mins away by car.

Hmmmmm?? I bought my T68m in March on Orange from Carphone Warehouse, just a handset upgrade from a nokia 6210. Got it upgraded to i status in May without any problems at all. CPW even gave me a loan phone free of charge! It was a Trium, but cant argue with that!

What may have helped is that Ive got an early phone without an Orange logo on the casing. But surely the software would indicate its Orange? Still did not stop the upgrade though, thank god.

Dont have any problems with Orange; got a good relationship with them. Ideally want to be on Vodafone, but they are ssssssooooooooo expensive.

Looks like Orange have cottoned on to the fact that people will upgrade their phones rather than buy a new handset, and so they are blocking the upgrade. The upgrade does not involve any revenue for Orange. I can see their point of view, but they are acting very harshly. They will loose customers with this.

Batch_2002,

I think this one is going to run and run.
I do believe however that it is a real shame that Orange could not see their way to providing their customers with something that is freely available on every other British network. It is just another example of how Orange is letting things slide when it comes to customer relations.

If Orange is going to provide us with handsets that are modified by them and as a result lack some of the features of the standard hand set. Have they not got the wrong idea? OK in this case it was an update to the standard hand set that has led to the problem. But as Orange now support the updated version of the handset, what is there to stop them putting that FW on the T68m handsets that they issued earlier.

I know in the UK that we are used to cheap handsets and being tied to a Service Provider for at least a year to pay for that. I am beginning to think that it may be wiser to stump up the cost of the handset upfront and have the freedom to use it as you please.

As I count away the days that remain in my relationship with Orange I can only feel grateful that there are other shit Service Providers out there for me to choose from!

Im saying that it might work because at cpw they scanned the codes on the sticker to check the original network

Have you tried to do a thread here trying to assemble as many posts as possible about the upgrade which is not available?

You could send a copy to SE and one to Orange. But not the secretaries, go for the top.

At least they will know that many people are upset. Orange is acting strange there in the UK, hope it does not the same here in Switzerland.
Why not allow people to get the upgrade? There would be far more MMS capable devices and Orange would make more money. If the want people to buy a new phone with a contract with them, they have to pay a part of the phone...
I don't understand it.

But anyway, I would go for the solution I suggested.

I hear what you say pinolo.

It may be worth a shot. Anybody know anyone at Orange to get in touch with?

Ok people, may have found a way to argue the point with Orange on this. First, note the following two excerpts from the Orange Terms & Conditions (taken from the manual supplied with my T68)

6.4 things that you agree to do
Recognising that good management and security of the Services is important to all Orange customers, you agree that you will:

6.4.6 use only Phones and Accessories approved for use with the Network, and comply with all relevant legislation or regulation relating to their use.

14 phones
your phone is not a part of your contract

14.1 Your Phone and Accessories are acquired by you outside the terms of your Contract

Based on this :
1) Since the T68i is now available on Orange, it must be approved for use, so they can't object as the hardware is identical
2) If the phone is outside the terms of the Contract, then they cannot tell you what you can and cannot do with it.

Anyone got any thoughts?

It looks like you MAY be able to upgrade on Orange (UK) after all. See latest response below and draw your own conclusions. I was sent this after listing the reasons why I thought not being able to upgrade was unacceptable...
===================================
Dear Simon

Thank you for your recent mail.

Please accept our apologies for the delay in responding, we have recently
received several mails regarding the T68 software upgrades, and I would like
to convey the latest information that we have regarding this matter.

Several phone manufacturers and outlets are offering existing T68 owners the
opportunity to upgrade the software on their phones to mirror that of the T68i.
Whilst
Orange do not currently endorse this software upgrade, we will continue to
support
our customers with any queries they may have.

The T68 software upgrade does not affect the Care and Warranty status on the
account, however, any replacement issued by Orange at this time will have
standard
T68 software. This decision has been taken as an act of goodwill to support our
quality customer experience.

Should you wish to escalate your points further, it would be necessary to
contact
our Data support specialists on 156 from your Orange phone, or 07973 100 156
from
any other phone, where trained representative will be happy to assist. If they
are unable
to answer your questions satisfactorily, the call may be escalated.

I hope this information is of assistance.

Kind Regards
