Must of us here have already gotten used to this WAP thing, and are loving the speed of GPRS , especially with SOny/Ericsson phones. LOL!
But honestly GPRS isnt fast enough anymore. 56kbps, on average just doesnt cut it. I know with the implementation of MPEG-4 over the wireless telcos network would help 3g services, but I'm talking about the speed.
EDGE has huge advantages............

384kbps (even though, Cingular wireless' CEO on Apples NEw York webcast said a higher speed--in theory) opens up huge doors. especialy when linking up our PDA's and Laptops.
qoute from Ericsson's site"EDGE is three times faster than GPRS
EDGE offers three times the data speeds of GPRS. Using EDGE operators can handle three times more subscribers than GPRS, triple their data rate per subscriber, or add extra capacity to their voice communications. EDGE increases data speeds to 384 Kbps. This translates into a bit rate of 48 Kbps per timeslot.
EDGE is easy to install
EDGE is compatible with recent equipment. If an operator has an Ericsson RBS 2000 macro base station from 1995 or later, they are ready to take on EDGE. Some additional hardware using plug-in transceivers, and new software that can be installed remotely is all that is needed for operators to start offering high-quality Mobile Internet services over their existing infrastructure today. EDGE is the easiest way for operators to get high-speed data services up and running right now.
EDGE is high capacity
EDGE provides operators with three times the data capacity of GPRS. With the enormous increase of both voice and data traffic currently taking place over mobile networks, and the explosion expected with 3G, EDGE is an ideal solution for meeting the marketöÁ ever-increasing demand for capacity.
EDGE is a GSM technology
Consumers expect seamless service. EDGE offers all the benefits of an existing GSM network, along with high-speed 3G. Not only does EDGE share the same core network as WCDMA, it can also be rolled out simultaneously, or even before, to provide subscribers with the reliable coverage they need. Because WCDMA and EDGE are complementary technologies, subscribers will be able to carry on using the same applications and handsets well into the future. "
However NO cellphone company has yet built a prototype phone that with its current designs can be marketed using EDGE technology. Even though EDGE is a software upgrade for cell sites, GPRS phones, T-68m/i T-39m, V66/60, etc. will NOT BE ABLE to take advantage of EDGE technology speeds once implemented. This troubles me deeply. I see now phones on ANY manufacturers site of upcoming EDGE data rates/technology. We're in Europe (2002 qtr 4), Canada/USA (Qtr 2, 2003) are expecting EDGE data rates to be marketed soon. but still no word on phones to take advantage of this speed.
I envision a wireless world to surpass the thrills and benefits that the Transformers on Cybertron enjoyed!
What would you like to see 3G data rates be used 4?
What services would you pay money for?
What do you want in a phone that can do 3G that your current phone doesnt do?s
Why do you want your 3G phone to do it??!!! |

Now, that sounds interesting. If it really builds upon an already existing network/technology, it should be easier/cheaper for the operators to roll out.
A big shame though, that gprs phones of today wouldn't be able to handle it.
What I want from 3G or EGDE is the data speed and reliability. Since I live on the countryside, I haven't got broadband or "luxyries" like that, but with a mobile network even I could be blessed with speed |

Froddan you got the picture!
Hope that service will provide the much needed speed in your area. |
