well, not exactly transparent.. but taking a photo of what's behind your monitor then using it as your wallpaper can create the illusion.
here's a link to a bunch of examples.

Im doing that, RIGHT now!
Nick
Edit: Its a pain in the Arse. That was very difficult, and the cropping on my part) sucked. Besides, I've just got a white wall behind mine.
But... You could do it for real. Only problem is your monitor wouldn't have a backlight. I mean, you could put it up against the window... Man that'd be joy! Ok, basically, take your TFT monitor apart, and get rid of the thing on the back. And the backlight. Thats it. And you could have a translucent dynamic window pane or sumthing.
In fact, I've just decided that that is the first thing im doing when and if Im ever rich. Making an entire window out of TFT monitors... Then i could truly claim to having "Windows" installed .

He he, thats really cool, will try it when I get back to one location, but at the moment, I am travelling alot, and I don't feel like doing alot of stuff! (As in, taking pictures whenever I settle for a few hours). That could get very dull

Agreed.
I think the best way would be to have a digital camera on a tripod facing your desk without the screen there, take a picture.
Then put the laptop back and connect the camera to the comp, with it still on the tripod.
Take another picture, this time with the laptop there, with the laptop's desktop as perfectly white (or blue, or sumthing).
Now use photoshop:
----1. Make the first pic the background layer (the one without the laptop)
----2. Make a new layer with the other pic (with the laptop)
----3. Use the magic wand (selector thingy) to select the desktop
----4. Delete what you've selected.
Now you end up with a pic like the ones they used on that site, but your won't have been authentic. Good enough to show friends tho .
