However you could also use the mp3Pro route as I do for my music on my s700. It is beter than mp3 at lower bitrates without losing much quality and I find that the files are the same size if not smaller than aac files.

mp3pro again???

When will people realize that k700i/s700i, and even the new k750 and w800 for the matter, DONīT DECODE MP3PRO, hence, thereīs no advantage of using it, it will be just like a simple low bitrate mp3.

Even in your pc youīll need a special player or codec for taking advantage of mp3pro...

All i was stating is mp3pro gives you better quality at lower bitrates than standard mp3, i didnt say that the s700i doesn't play them....

And what i say is that the file you converted plays like a normal mp3 in your s700, because s700 doesnīt have the required codec for taking advantage of mp3pro, thatīs as simple as that

read on

http://www.mp3prozone.com/basics.htm

Youīll realize using mp3pro canīt be better than using aac in your S700, and k700

Oh yeah! Just tried dbpoweramp, man what impressive kit. Using the mp4 converter I've got Highly listenable songs from 4MB (mp3) to 1.5MB average using 64Kbps with hardly any loss in quality. If I was to settle for 48Kbps, it would be a meg per song. But 48Kbps has too many compression artifacts for it to be a pleasure to listen to.

Using direct cd rip the songs are even better quality, but slightly larger (but only a couple hundred Kb).

dedicating 30 MB of my K700 memory for music, I can fit the same number of songs that fit on my 64 MB SE bt headset mp3 player, which I can now eliminate from my carry around paraphenalia

yes, k500 is the exact same platform and basically support the same things as k700, its just trimmed down on certain features like smaller resolution screen, less memory and no bluetooth.

PS: Arez is completely right about the mp3pro question, for k500/k700/s700, mp4/AAC is the way to go. Best mp4/aac encoder in my view are the Nero encoder. And best quality is gained by ripping from cd direct to mp4/aac instead of converting an allready compressed mp3.

absolutely, however using ripped mp3 gives a slightly smaller file size than straight form cd. Of course the quality isn't as good, but because the mp3 file is converted to wave before ripping to mp4, there seem to be less conversion artifacts than if you do the rip straight from cd on a lower bitrate than normal to get the same smaller file size.

It works well enough that I have decided not to rip my music from cd (again) to mp4, and will just convert straight from mp3 (all mine are 128 or better)

Did you try the nero codec ?
Using the nero codec it doesnt convert to wav first, and imho the nero codec has less artefacts than the other mp4 codecs. Just a tip if you havent tried it yet

@numb, so I've been hearing. I'll have to get a full copy of Nero 6 (or maybe I already have it with one of my DVD Burners)

Thanks for the tip

What do you mean by "converting to wav (or wave)"?
I mean, wav is a Microsoft definition of the organization of a sound file. But the actual sound data in a wav can be compressed by any codec you like. So a wav can very well contain mp3 or mp4 compressed sound.

wav is an Uncompressed PCM. DBPoweramp creates a wav file in the root directory when ripping. You can watch it appear and grow insize then disapear as songs are ripped.

Read up your digital music history - wav is virtually public domain, it's not "owned" by MS.

in dbpoweramp, the mp3 file is Uncompressed into a PCM stream (saved on the hard drive temporarily with .wav extension), then the resultant wav file is compressed using the aac codec.

A wav file cannot "contain" an mp3, since it is uncompressed music, whereas MP3 is at best a lossy compression. A wav file by definition is uncompressed audio. It is the core Pulse Code Modulation signal sampled from the original analog sound source. The MS wav standard is CD compatible and has become well used. (This info is more or less correct but I'm no expert and someone could explain it better than I can. But don't try and tell me a wav file can "contain" an mp3, sheesh).

The songs on an audio cd are already uncompressed, so they don't need to be ripped to wav first. As numb says, Nero can rip direct from MP3 to AAC, it doesn't have to uncompress first. Doing it that way is VERY hard to do well, which I imagine is why very few encoders encode direct from one codec to another.

Incidently, the wav format, and any pcm format for that matter, is not a codec, it is what you have before you apply a codec (codec stands for compression/decompression, as in compress to store, decompress to play)
