By doing quite a lot of searches, I have noticed that there are multiple but scattered posts with encoding suggestions, so I thought (like my sites page) I would create a single post for Encoding settings that various people have suggested.

VirtualDub; Render out both video and audio uncompressed first.
Smartmovie;
Reduce Frames= Ticked
Codec= 3ivx (Dual Pass [Constant Bitrate/15-25Kbps/HPM/FVM])
Bitrate= 112 Kbps
Audio= 24 kbps 16000hz Force Mono
Volume Boost= 150%
Average Size per 90 Minutes= 120mb

The bitrate is really the only variable, depending on length of video. For music videos use 15kbps video and 32kbps audio.

Hehe, I'm glad you think of me as a "Leading Encoder" .
I generally adjust the video bitrate untill its under 125mb, then up the sound quality until the filesize reaches the maximum. So basically, you're getting the best possible.

Here are the general Settings:
Reduce Frames: Tick
Video Encoder: XviD
Bitrate: 128Kbps
Audio Codec: LAME Mp3 Codec
Force Mono: Tick
Frequency: 16000Hz
Bitrate: 64Kbps

Crop Mode: None (I leave this to keep the aspect ratio and the full screen. It may leave black bits, but they are ok in my opinion. Its nicer to have a widescreen film . )

I find that these work for most movies, especially if you cut out the credits. I always cut the intros and credits in an effort to get a better quality movie in the end.

I'd assume that for music Videos you may want to increase the bitrate of frequency of the audio, and probably leave the video the same.

hi im not a techy guy but i was looking for some good settings for smartmovie encoding but found many different settings probably because different people have different definitions of "good".So after trial and error i found these to work the best when playing an animation(it may be different for movies or may not):

Reduce Frames: Tick
Video Encoder: XviD
Bitrate: 112Kbps
Audio Codec: LAME Mp3 Codec
Force Mono: Tick
Frequency: 16000Hz
Bitrate: 48Kbps
Volume Boost: variable

my definition of good is having good smoothness with decent quality and sound(smoothness is priority).

hope this works

Hello guys i'm neew here and i would like your help plz.Nice post here gathering the video settings.But i habe got to say i've tried them all and was very disappointed with the results.The video quality was not good at all.

Can someone tell me what is the maximum bitrate p900 can handle while playing smoothle?I don't care for the filesize since i got a 512mb stick.

I try 224video and 96 audio in 22050hz stereo mode but though the quality is good the playback isn't!

@ The rock...

The Smartmovie settings give good quality, but 99% of the quality depends on the video source...

So do you know how much bitrate can it handle?

Also why does everyone puts force mono?Stereos good for the headphone ain't that right?

The maximum Ive used is 150 in mp4, I dont specify in smart movie because i use the 3ivx codec and select consistant quality at about 85% for films on the 512 MS. I usually get good results.

Do you have smartmovie?. If so go to
http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=87078&forum=35

Check out the SERchive website and go to Esato Backup and try out some films.

Damn you reply fast!

Well yes i have smartmovie it's what i use for the conversions.

Do you believe mp4 are better?I've tried mpegable but i found the results worse than smartmovie!Though the aac sound in the videos was clear as a crystal.

Another question.How can i use a vdub settings file?I have a .vcf and when i open it in vdub it says something like "the object stream has already been created you can't set stream bla bla..."

I don't know much about VDub, Syntax, Chemos or Nickrooster know more about that. I prefer avi to mp4, although Chemos makes some prety good mp4's you might want to check out. As for mono over stereo sound, its just to reduce file size, also some people watch films using loud speaker, in which case the stereo is a little pointless.

Ok thanx man.

@Syntax

Do you know what's wrong with loading the vcf settings in my case?

Also about your method,why should i uncompress video and sound?Not only it will take long but i will also create a huge file in my hard drive right?

Now about uncompressing all i do is selecting no compressing in video and audio in vdubmod and then save as avi right?

Also why did you choose 3ivx?I tried it but i didn't have video neither on my pc nor in the mobile.I have the k-lite codecs of course installed.

And you also say to use 15-25 kbps and 112bitrate.How can i do that?where do i choose to set the 15-25?kbps and bitrate ain't the same thing?

I would really appreciate your help.

hi. i convert movies using smartmovie also. some movies, especially large ones, when i play it in portrait mode, it's smooth and there's no problem. but when i play it in landscape mode, the video's always choppy.

any suggestions on how to fix this?

thanks!
