UMTS never made it here, infact it goes like gsm, gprs, edge, and 3g here. There is also cdma2000 or cdma1x which is pathetic.

3G/UMTS has yet to mature so it will be about 2years until we see the next major shift.

4G Tests sucessfull! (topic 12050 from back in oct 2002)

4G Network in development (topic 60088 from June last year)

4G Services to be introduced (topic 55335 from April last year)

but of course, these are all DoCoMo in Japan

Btw i m using reliance cdma1x for browsing net on pc i get about 7-8 kbps during daytime would like 2 know what speeds u get on edge and what's max speed of cdma1x thnks

EDGE is probably best considered 2.75G.

4G is unlikely to be avilable for between five and seven years yet, even then it is almost certain to be available in Japan and South Korea before anywhere else.

EDGE should be able to give speeds of upto 384 kbps. But i really dunno how much it gives in actual working.
