PTT Push to Talk on SE? |

Hi guys
I live 12000miles from my folks and have been using all sorts to communicate with them as cheap as possible.
Recently on BBC there was a program, the 'Gadget Show' or something which covered mobile phone technology used in the USA, called PTT. This has now spread to the UK, Europe India etc. From what I can gather it works on the same basis as using voice on MSN / Yahoo messenger / Skype etc, but is built into normal mobiles with a dedicated button. The point being that you dont get charged by call or distance, but only a cheap flat rate.
Being a supporter of SE I was wondering if any of you have had some experience with this? I also noted some sites claiming software developed for this functionality but running on normal GPRS and P800/P900/P910 is mentioned.
Motorola and Siemens already has some handsets on the market with a PTT button, I expect Sony will foolow suit.

its liek a walkie talkie... or a 2 way radio... someone can just 'beep' in and start talking. then you have to hold down a button, and talk back. you get a new phone number also, so yoiu have a phone number, and a PTT number, and the PTT number is liek 555*55*5555 and you have to actually use the stars. but basically, its a phone and a 2 way radio in one. people usually alwyas have it on speaker phone when they do this.
maybe someone can explain this a little better than i did, i didnt do a great job lol

It's pretty much a voice message. When you talk, it save it as a voice message and send it to other party. When they answer it basically a voice message u are hearing. A couple of buddy try it and there's a delay of 5 to 30 sec. when they speak and when other party actually hear the message. Agilemobile have a free apps that work decent. Also try http://www.t2me.net

it never takes that long here... sometimes at partys and stuff, one person can be in one room, and another in another room, and one talks, and i can hear it almost at the exact same time they say it out of the others phone. people have full conversations on them all the time. it is unlomited time, unlike cell phone minutes

It's actually Voice Over IP or VOIP

Ayush i think VoIP is different from PTT. VoIP is voice over internet protocol which is a technology for transmitting voice over the internet using packet switched networks.

There is also a PTT product called VC which stands for visual communications. It is:
- Freeware
- Has messanging options
- Has a PTT facility that works it was described above (press internet button, speak, resulting file is sent via GPRS connection to destination party)
The only charge for this is your own costs for GPRS usage. I have installed this but have the following question that is not answered in the product documentation:
There are currently 1500 users of VC online. Where is this "place"? Is it a VC proprietary place or is this a product agnostic "place" where all PTT services are made available?
I haven't tried the PTT feature because I know of nobody else in the world who has a P910 with VC installed and I don't want to talk to a stranger just to prove the technology works
You can download this at http://www.sapio.se/
Incidentally, I discovered this software in the software section of uiqzone - http://uiqzone.org/software/category.php/conn/internet
Elsewhere in this site is a very handy guide to the latest firmware levels available for the various SE P??? phones - e.g. the P910s are listed in http://uiqzone.org/software/firmware_p910.php |
