Is signal strength from the same better on different phones.
For example, could it be better with T-mobile on a Nokia than a Sony Ericsson? |

it depends on the fone and on the operator aswell, but its possible that on the one barnd fone its better as on the other

Often, the issue of signal strength on a phone is not as straightforward as we would like it to be. Some factors: phone itself, network operator coverage, topography... :yawn: ...zzzzzz

topography means the nature around u ( fields, hills etc ) i am currantly between hills with high of 1000 m in average, so the reception isnt the best. the best solution therefoe are sat fones, cos u rec and send calls through the satelites, so any kind of area has got the same kind of coverage ( /// r290 )

Still on topography, my previous residence sits in a depression, making it a blackhole for all 4 available networks. Some networks had better coverage than others of course, but finding and holding on to a signal was a herculean task for most phones at that place. Walk a few metres away from the house & you could pick a strong signal.

A little explaination on how the mobile phone works in terms of signal strength:
Your phone is constantly taking measurements of the signal strengths from the base stations in your surrounding area. It logs onto the base station with the strongest signal and stays there until its either booted off (due to congestion) or you move out of range of the base station.
So what you see on your mobiles screen is a constant changing of signal strength on the signal bar indicator.
If the signal is weak, the signal is boosted internally by the phone to a small degree (AGC - automatic gain control) but nothing really significant.
Bobafett is also correct, depending on the topology of your area, the coverage provided by the base station is dependant on the location of the nearest base station (you could just be on the edge oof the coverage cell) and you surroundings.
Base stations need line of sight to operate, so if you live in a valley this could become a problem if the network has not catered for coverage in the valley itself but rather put up base stations on the hill tops.
If you are encountering coverage problems report them to the network, they may come out and visit you and maybe even give you an antenna.
