I'm using a Nokia 7250i at moment which is suppost to be tri-band but the sim is only a gsm. The 7250i has no vid, just camera. . . I'v just got a Nec338 . . Which i think is just 3g only. (the sim is a USIM) Apart from the services providd by '3' .(uk network3) i can't do anything else. Bit of a waste really. (wish i'd hav lookd into this 2g/3g/smartfone topic earlier. . . !) tut! Does any1 hav any info or advice on if its possible to browse gprs/2g sites with a 3g only fone ? Please!

If it has gprs, you can. If there is ONLY 3g, i'm afraid.

In the phones features it does say it has a 2.5 gprs browser. But god knows how to get to it or activate it. U can switch the gprs off and just hav the 3g only signal. . . . But not vice versa! . . . . Wish i'd got a Nokia now!! :(

3, on branding their phones, make sure that you cant see any sites outside their own...they kinda ruin the phone.

3 will not allow full internet access until they have an incentive to do so. At the moment the majority of their revenue , like all the other UK networks, comes from voice calls, not data. When data services become either the primary means of income or play an increased role in generating revenue then 3 will be forced to compete with the other networks' data options to remain competitive.

I heard 'H3 UK' - 3, had been forced to merge with 2g company MM02 (bt cellnet) and the 2g/3g wud b available to all 3's customers by about May2005. . . So in theory 3's mobiles should already has 2g software in there somewhere?? Shouldnt they?? . .Huh?

@MsJ

As far as I am aware O2 and 3 haven't merged.

@MsJ

mm02 is O2, it is common to use the shortened version. BT sold off their mobile division and they have no control over O2 (mm02) anymore.

3 use O2's 2.5G network in the UK to allow their customers to make calls and utilise some data services when not within 3's 3G coverage.

I am of the opinion that if a platform already exists on a network, not allowing people to use it is a waste of resources. I expect that allowing untethered browsing would motivate people to browse more, which should result in bigger income.
