so, using the v800 as an example, theoretically speaking, if the SE wanted to they could have put another sim card slot in to take a standard (non usim) card so that it could use the 3g network then at the flick of a switch, move to the 2.5g network sim?
edit: and the main hardware change would be the second sim slot, the actual shape/weight of the phone would not change drastically?

I know from experience that all Orange uk handsets and sims and back and forth compatable.
ir i can take a Z1010 and a 3G USIM and they will work, in my other hand i have a K700i with a normal 2G sim.
should i swap the sims about both phones will still work, for example the K700i with the USIM in it will still work as a phone and have all the functionality of the K700i as in mms, grps etc. i can also place my 2g sim in the Z1010 and it will work for all that a 2G sim is good for, ie mms, and gprs etc.
a dual mode phone?? you have all heard of a Nokia 7600 havent you? thats dual mode? a sim free generic version can be told to look for WCDMA or GSM networks.
so im a bit lost, will a 2G Voda sim not work in a V800? and vica versa will a 3G USIM not work in a Voda K700i?

i have a usim w/c came from z1010, when i inserted usim to my t39, t68 and t610 it wont work... simcard error
ordinary old sim will work w/ z1010
dual mode = gsm and wcdma (pcs)
dual band = either gsm 900 and 1800 or 850 and 1900
tri band = either gsm 900, 1800, 1900 or gsm 850, 1800 and 1900
quaband (motorola rav v3) = gsm 850, 900, 1800, 1900
btw, i was able to flash 2 z1010 and the frequency becomes gsm 900, 1800 and 1900 (flashed w/ eu1 version, using davinciteam.com)

Just for clarifications sake, considering all the GSM TDMA confusion. There are a number of ways to multiplex a signal, the three main methods are:
FDM - Frequency Division Multiplexing
TDM - Time Division Multiplexing
CDM - Code Division Multiplexing
These are the basis for the standard schemes of similar names:
FDMA - Frequency Division Multiple Access
TDMA - Time Division Multiple Access
CDMA - Code Division Multiple Access
To confuse the matter further, CDMA is also used generically to refer to Qualcomm's set of standards, which is the context meant when you see GSM and CDMA directly compared.
So finally -
GSM uses TDMA
CDMA (the standard) obviously uses CDMA (the multiplexing method)
UMTS uses WCDMA (a variation on CDMA (standard), uses CDMA (mux scheme) combined with TDM (mux method) and a higher frequency carrier wave).

I don't really see why you would want a second sim slot to begin with. Surely a SIM card that supports but 2.5 and 3G (in other words supports gprs/gsm/wcdma in case of the V800) would rule out the need of a separate sim slot?

@vlam.... u right there... on voda UK we dont have USIMS or any special sims for the 3G network.... u just need a thing called the VIDEO SOC added to ur account and thats it, all 3G services ready...
My sim is about 3yrs old an works perfectly well in my v800 both on 2.5g and 3g services....
Whether the other networks r different i dont know... all i do know is 3 in the UK HAVE to have a USIM and it will ONLY work in a 3 handset as 3 have stopped people using their cards in other none 3G handsets... |
