I know with the P series we look at the CDA and than compare it to whats on the screen. How do we know what firmware the update service has, cause all you do is click automatic and it just updates the firmware onto your phone.

we don't ...

it is funny with SE US... it is not the Service to take for real yet... Sometimes it will tell you you already have latest firmware, sometimes it will just flash the same one... I don't know... I didn't find the way to check it yet, maybe someone else did... it is funny anyway... SE has made it possible to upgrade only firmware (not do the language change or something else as advanced) without any additional equipment/protection... you can use simple Service Cable/DSS... and it doesn't work as ahould!?!

agreed, I used to get a message saying that I already has the latest firmware but since they "fixed" the online update service it doesn't tell me anymore even with the same K700

its a shame it doesn't work like the P900 and P910 update where it tells you the latest firmware version before you decide to go through with the update

Move all files in C:\Program Files\Sony Ericsson\Update Service\software-data (suppose the default installtion dir. of SEUS software is C:\Program Files\Sony Ericsson\Update Service\) to another folder. Start SEUS software by the website with phone on DSS-20 or DSS-25. After download starts, unplug the phone from DSS. After download completes, SEUS will report error because it can't find the phone on DSS any more. Ignore the error and close SEUS software. Go to C:\Program Files\Sony Ericsson\Update Service\software-data and compare the files with the ones you moved out before. If the downloaded files have different sizes from and 'newer' filenames than the ones moved out, new FW is on SEUS.

In this way, we can tell whether a new FW is published on SEUS or not without flashing our phones.

Yes, 'newer' filenames, as I said

sorry, strange for some reason I only read you mentioning file sizes and missed the second part about file names.

of course file sizes don't matter when the file names are different.

Still, you'd think SE would make it more obvious so people don't have to continually reflash their phones before they know if they have a new version. Not many people are going to go through that fuss that you describe

If I was a mobile company, my firmwares for a mobile always would have one, definied size. Otherwise it can't fit in to its memory declared, and can harm personal data.
I had siemens, and on that all fws had exactly same size. I think it could be "normal".

And you mistake. Some monthes ago SE US showed if you don't need update:

SEUS is supposed to tell whether users' phones need to be updated or not. But now since it can't for some reason, my little trick works out.
