The new Sharp V902 UMTS phone, just relased on the Vodafone network, rocks!
- 2 Megapixel camera
- 320x240 pixel TFT screen
- Bluetooth
- etc

I've called the Vodafone Citypoints in the Netherlands, but the Sharp will not be in the shops before December.
Who already owns one?

I wonder particularly about
- photo quality
- Bluetooth: any problems connecting to headsets and PC?
- Videotelephony: Can you point the camera at yourself when watching the screen? From the photos I have seen it looks like the screen-angle is not optimal when the camera is pointed at your face (and the screen is turned 180 degrees).
- What limitations has Vodafone imposed on the software? Can you send and receive emails with pictures? Can you up- and download jpegs and videos to and from the phone over USB?

gaston,

yr post is very timely. i dont live in europe so i dont know when the 902 will be launched in europe. in japan it will be launched 2nd week in december.

everybody is focusing their attention on the se v800. as would be expected in this forum.
however, the fone to watch, and probably wait for, is indeed the v902 by sharp.
in every way its full specs (as released on the vodafone japan web site (named 902SH in japan)) is either better than or equal to the se.
you can see the marketing positioning by virtue of the numbering difference: 800 series vs. 900 series.
most interesting to focus on is the camera specs: 2megapixel ccd (sharp) versus 1.3megapixel cmos (se).
the sharp camera has a 2 times mechanical zoom and 10 times digital zoom. the se camera has a 4 times digital zoom only.
also, the sharp camera is an autofocus lens versus fixed focus on the se.
additionally, the sharp is a genuine qvga display with a 2.4 inch display versus the se 2.2 display size. this is a very large difference.

you are right to ask when it is to be launched. the fone to watch and wait for, in terms of spec, is the sharp.

i myself will buy the se v802 when it is launched in japan. i like the design of the fon better, and although i may be the only one in the world, i actually prefer the softer focus of the cmos lens. it provides an artwork, rather than a too clean, crisp peice of recorded digital image. the cmos is almost an analogue image. the colours bleed into each other. having said that however, the cmos used in the se is very high grade of cmos and is very high quality.

Interesting point about the CMOS / CCD difference.
Do you know what kind of flashlight is used in the Sharp? Is it LED-flash, or traditional?

I thought Japan was ahead of Europe when it comes to cameraphones, but I understand the Sharp 902 is also by Japanese standards the best one to buy?

I agree the Sharp 902 appears to be the digital all-in-one pocket device we've been waiting for: excellent camera, UMTS, videotelephony, stereo MP3, Bluetooth, memory cards, highest resolution TFT screen, etc. etc.

Pity about missing out on the touch-screen, which I like very much on my P800.

hello,
there are no details listed anywhere about the kind of flash.
by the way, the 2nd (sub) camera in the 902 is actually a cmos lens.
in japan, it seems that maybe near 70% of the fon cameras are ccd. the rest is cmos. the "best" camera lens in japan is one with a 4megapixels ccd.

Allright, two cameras on board!
Didn't know that...
The secondary cam is probably meant for video-telephony then.

You have one?

Can you answer my questions in the first posting?
And can you post a picture you took with the 2 megapixel camera?
Any other remarkable things about this phone (both positive and negative)?

thanks!

In a newsitem, elsewhere here on Esato, I read that Sharp will use Symbian OS in their new phones:
http://www.esato.com/news/article.php/id=144

Does anyone know if the Sharp V902 will have a Symbian OS ?
Or will it be the traditional ITRON ?

Seems that the Sharp V902 has been removed from the Dutch and UK Vodafone websites.

I've heard they're having trouble finalizing the (embedded) software.
Hope this will not mean we have to wait until after Christmas....

Quote from the German Nov 10th press-release by Vodafone:

"Price including 2 hours of Vodafone MobileTV (selected special contents for UMTS mobiles, excluding the Sharp 902, with new programmes lasting 10-60 minutes on a daily or weekly basis)"

Why is the Sharp 902 EXCLUDED here? Some restrictions with MobileTV that other 3G/UMTS handsets do not have?

Weird, cause here in The Netherlands in all the "Watch TV on your mobile" (or something like that) ads they use a 902 for showing it off.
