Ericsson demonstrate the next generation of SMS: MMS (Multimedia Message Service).
With MMS, you can send and receive text, pictures and melodies with the T68 and future models.

The ericsson website says that MMS will only be incorporated into T68 when the service becomes available.. does that mean our current T68's don't have MMS? will we be able to ulock it or upgrade our software to MMS?

assadm: Correct, the available T68 does not support MMS.
But you will be able to get a new software version supporting MMS sometimes next year.

(I have been snooping around here at Ericsson, but hasnīt got any answers yet...)

Still pretty useful to me, I use it to confirm things i'm getting for the mrs at the mall etc, works like a charm in saving me the extra trips. Plus its a cool way to send my seasons greetings or to announce my newborns with pictures that are worth more than a thousand words. I won't get a phone that's hspa capable but has no mms support

Yeah its like I dont send postcards anymore(who does)so now I send picture postcards with my phone if I am on holiday. What better way than to get a live picture of where you are with you in the picture. Its great though I dont use it that much.

never saw the point of MMS really as I prefer to send an email and I can include more content and it falls within my data plan, which is usually unlimited, rather than the extravagant MMS prices

But it is good when you can carry your phone everywhere take a photo and send it. If its somewhere you might be exploring or something. You would not have your laptop with you everywhere would you? Or do you send pics via email on your iphone?

ever since T68 I've used my phone for email... mind you T68 could send attachments but couldn't receive attachments IIRC... it wasn't until the K700 that I could do that

MMS still going strong here in the Philippines... at least for one Network (Smart Telecom). Smart MMS is as cheap as US$0.003 per send. (200 MMS for US$0.63.)

It all boils down to two things, and one is really a result of the other -- pricing, and willingness of the user to set up their phone. In the Philippines, virtually nobody uses the phone's built-in email client because data charges cost too much, mail servers are usually accessible only from a postpaid account (most Philippine users prefer prepaid accounts), and the networks' customer service people don't know how to set up the email client. (This lack of training is a result of customers not interested in the email client in the first place.) Also, people who use internet browsers, including Opera Mini, are still in the minority. So even if one did use the email client and/or a browser for emailing, he hardly has any other phone to send files to.

On the other hand, MMS is fairly easy to set up and either comes preconfigured or automatically sent OTA. So the only question is the pricing.

I hope the other major Philippine network (Globe Telecom) offers MMS as cheap as Smart's later....

But you're forgetting ... this was 2001 ... a time where MMS was part of a voice add-on and Email on phones was VERY difficult for users to setup, let alone nothing more than basic text on SE phones as well as nokia's and motorola's. Smartphones where not much better at it and had serious limitations with attachments and size. Back then the only real winner to email was the same as it is today ... RIM & their BlackBerry, but its slowly changing.

Emailing would give you the same effect MMS has if the recipient has push mail. I think email is probably more appropriate for business and if high quality pics is essential. But nothing beats MMS for fun though
