Trying out smartmovie which looks very good and easy to convert say mpg files but what software is best (preferably free) to get a DVD into a format that smartmovie can convert?

New to DVD conversion stuff apart from using DVDShrink for "backups".

Can someone also confirm best settings for smartmovie to produce excellent sound & picture quality (not too worried if size goes too large as I have 512MB card)

Before anyone chips in, I have spent hours checking the forums on esato reading the posts & various other info on the web.

There are multiple programs to turn DVD into AVI or MPEG.

DVDx is an example of one of them, and easy to use. If you want more info about ripping DVD and converting them to AVI or MPEG give this site a visit. It contains links to programs as well as extended tutorials on how to use them...

About the SmartMovie settings, well, the better the quality, the larger the filesize. For audio, i personally use the highest settings, so 44 Hkz with 80 Kbit. For video, i wouldn't advice to go above 160 kbit/s as the video might get jerky. But that's on a P800, a P900 gets better results. Also it depends on the codec you use. Above settings are for the standard codec, but you can also use Divx Pro 5.2, it all depends on your personal taste....

Good luck!

Thanks for info. Download the DVDx. Whats the DivX5.2 Pro? Does it form part of Divx or Smartmovie? Is it much better & where do I get it?

divx is a compression CODEC - an encoding standard. Divx can be obtained from www.divx.com i guess, but for smartmovie, just download XVID from the smartmovie page. This is pretty much the same as DIVX, but is entirely free.

To get video off a dvd, you first need to "rip" it. I suggest going to www.doom9.org to get a very thorough background and all the tools you could ever need, but basically to get DVD > video you can use "dvd decrypter".

I believe that there is now an all in one dvd > p900 solution available, but I can't remember the name. I'm a big fan of smartmovie personally!

There's also a new program from 'Makayama Software' called DVD to Mobile. You can convert a dvd movie with 2 clicks onto a standard 128mb file size (not sure if theres options to go bigger then that regarding the p910). But you might also wanna check out what other users have said regarding this software on the forum as I'm not using it plus it's not free.

DVD to Mobile by 'Makayama Software' only encodes .MP4 files, not SmartMovie .AVIs

[NOTE]
DVD to Mobile is very easy to use and the quality isn`t bad...but nothing compared to SmartMovie .Avi standard.

Worth taking a look and maybe give the trailware a try.

SmartMovie is the most speed+quality optimized player I've seen on a P. Way better than .MP4!

You may create .MP4 from *DVDs* with Nero Recode (in the NeroVision Express package). It does a great job. Remember to resize the image to 320x208 (landscape) or 208x... (portrait), and drop the bitrate.

Then, if not satisfied you can convert the .MP4 to SmartMovie .AVI. Just download the proper DirectShow codec (link in SmartMoviw page).

Oh yeah, and if Nero Recode says the DVD is protected, install AnyDVD.

Have fun
