Encoding with SmartMovie; what are your experiences. |

Interested as to what setting people using to encode with and how it plays on the P900. I normally use 144kbps video bit rate and 64K kbps for audio. This is with Xvid and Lame codec's.
If I wanted to fit a Simpsons episode onto the 32 duo I'd have to drop to 56Kkbps for the audio so 21 mins would take up around 30.3 meg.
Smart Movie encoder is excellent as it does pretty much everything for you but I'll going to play around with doing it manually. I'll demux it and encode the audio separately to see if that can improve the quality slightly (I tend to watch while I'm on the Metro so there's a lot of ambient noise) |

There is some good information in that thread but the saying "finding a needle in a haystack" comes to mind There are 3357 replies and the search function on Esato does the wealth of information here a disservice
This is SmartMovie specific so at least you don't need to take the morning off to find the information.

@BTTF
Those are high settings. I take it you tick 'reduced frames'. I did read over on my-symbian that it was best to keep the combination of auio and video bit rate to around 200. That way the P900 processor can handle it. |

My p900 does not struggle 224k is where trobule begins i have 2 128's so i slipt a movie over two cards. each size being around 123mb quality is great. Of course i reduce frames who doesent please tell me you do!
And finally i find the sudio has no effect on the video performance. or overall performance sound remains constantly good all through out the video. |

Of course I use reduced frames.
I guessed you were spanning the movie over two cards (just waiting for my second 128 duo to arrive). I will try the higher bit rate on the smaller things I normally encode (24, Sopranos, Star Trek:Voyager/Enterpriose Xmen/Spiderman cartoons etc) but I've found 144 to be the lowest I'm willing to go and will allow me to fit more on the card.
On the audio side I take it you use 44100hz with 80kbps. I presumed the lower settings (22khz, 16khz) were there to reduce the cpu usage as it makes no affect on the size of file. |

i have tried all the settings and crap like that and found the sweet spot for me being 80k audio 192k video with 44100khz its a good setting because i can get about three episodes of say friends or simpsons or fuurama on to one card the episodes are around 33mb each still a bit of room for pictures and video although i have a 3rd duo i use for pictures and video and other such novelty features. |

My Simpsons eps would come out at 42.4MB if I used your settings, so I wonder where the difference is? |

Ok then... Using "original" XvID Codec not that half ass hack version that came out later, it fuken' sucks for options.
Video
One Pass - Quality Mode 70% to 84% (depending on source)
Very High - Motion Search Precision.
H.263 Quantization
1/10 Min/Max - I Frame
Forced Optimization.
Audio
22050 Hz @ 56 kb/s to 64 kb/s (depending on source)
Does that help?

Interesting that you should use the 'normal' Xvid codec. I've got a fair amount of experiencing encoding to Xvid though I find the SmartMovie xvid codec not too bad for the P900.
With the settings that you used, what kind of file sizes do you get? |

I use the following settings ive encoded some guyver episodes and some south park and family guy
22 min ish episodes come out at 29 ish meg
Video Settings
Landscape
Reduce Frames (ticked)
XVID Encoder (there are no options to change)
Bitrate 144 Kbps
Audio Enabled and force mono at
16000 hz and 40 kbps with the lame codec
volume boost 160%
This make smooth decent quality movies that are not too big
Any tips on optimising this setup baring in mind i dont want dvd quality with dolby digital lol just decent watchable movies that are not too large.

why only 16khz? the file size dont change at all when you alter them why not use the highest settings of 44khz? |

Well I can get a 2 hour movie into 120mb or less with awesome quality. Every file encodes differently in size depending on initial encoding. I have seen other encoders notice a size difference as well when they try the original authors codec as well.
I have never used the one that came with smart movie, I am refering to the standard XVID codec I already had on my system, the hacked ones are the modified version of that codec that didnt work well at all.
I dont know who's version is included with SM, I didnt install it because mine works just fine

@ BTTF, I think it's because he is using Mono. In Stereo there is a file size difference and it will also hamper the playback quality of the video as the p800 is trying to decode both a&v streams. I am sure the p900 faired better in that department.
