I think one problem is that other people would see you using your mobile phone and automatically assume that they could use theirs too, without flight mode. This would be difficult for the stewardesses to police, so a blanket ban is easier at the moment until people become more educated. After all the stewardesses would have to check every phone against an approved list, and ensure that flight mode is really on.
Or maybe they just don't want pictures of their asses put up on here!

I'm going to buy a P900 and think that flight mode is one of the best things with it. I'm gonna use flight mode at my work in a chemical industry when i'm in the control room were mobile phones are not alowed. Now i can't check the calendar on my T68i without going to another room and turn it on, flight mode is great!

I use it all the time. I work in the oil industry and when i'm on site at one of our plants I switch to flight mode as mobile phones are not allowed. I need to access my calender and I use the camera quite a lot too. It's a fantastic tool! Only had my p900 a couple of months and i'm gonna post a new topic because I have a heap of questions which i'm sure you guys will be able to answer!

I use it all the time just like "the left hand", its really helpful when your on a site and i still need access to all the door security pin numbers held in my phone, would be pointless if i had to turn it off like my old t610.

Great feature!

I also use it a lot. Just when I don't want to be disturbed, but still want to fill out my agenda and tasklist, or just listen to some songs

Clearly a better name for flight mode would be "PDA-only" mode. Names like flight, hospital, movie, sleep, etc. just mean one usage type of the same mode.

If you're on-site, remeber that the phone still contains a battery which could spark (not much of a chance though), and the phone isn't intrinsically safe.

Thats true, wasnt there a problem in America with some (unknown over here) make of phone where the batteries were exploding? And all that having to turn off your phone in the petrol station too, isnt that about the battery?

this new scientist article has a good writeup on this topic. It seems battery and radio frequency emission can possibly cause a problem but the chances are quite low and in general considered to be an urban myth

The real reason you have to turn your phone off at the petrol station is because it interferes with the special pump software that monitors when you have put in exactly £xx.00 worth of fuel, and, just as you put the nozzle back in the holder and turn away, flicks the display to £xx.01

If u are on an airplane, do the stewardess check your fone aslong u fly if its on flight mode? Can a fone really cause any trouble in the plane system? Tia

I don't think the other passengers would be too impressed if your phone rang just as all the engines throttled back and died...

I saw one thread on bluejacking where someone named his phone 'Airbus A320' and then left his bluetooth discoverable whilst he was in the viewing lounge.

When the flight attendant asks you if its a mobile phone, just say "no". I used my p900 for 13 hours on a flight yesterday.
Make sure they know whos boss. [addsig]
