OGG files or MP3 files. |

I'm gonna buy a MS Duo stick 128mb so that I can listen to music when I go on vacation. But now I have a few little questions about that?
What is a "good" bitrate to convert MP3 files into OGG? I used 128 and that sounded good. OGG Files are smaller, so there is almost no doubt that I gonna use OGG instead of MP3. But what is the "lowest bitrate limit" to use with OGG files? 128, or can I can use lower, like 96 and still have "CD Quality" ?
But...., an example:
I got 2 MP3 files of the same length, lets say 4 minutes. One of the MP3 files has a bitrate of 128 and te other MP3 file a bitrate of 192.
If I both convert these files to OGG with a bitrate of 128, does the quality in the OGG files will be different? And the filesize? Does it matter for the filesize what bitrate the original (the MP3) files have?

---no the quality will be same.

i tried 60 bitrate and mono sound. there is no difference between this and 192kbps stereo mp3 file if u listen with loud speaker in the phone. but if u listen with headphones, i recommend u stereo and minimum 92kbps. cos, the speaker of phone cant give the sound exactly even its 500000kbps:D.

As a rule of thumb, you can always rip oggs at a lower bitrate than a similar quality mp3. In fact converting a 128 kbps mp3 to a 128 kbps ogg is not very useful.
Here is why:
A normal mp3 is constant bitrate (CBR)... ie, 128kbps mp3 consumes 128 kilo bits for 1 second of sound.
On the other hand ogg is variable bit rate (VBR). So, a 128 kbps ogg will mean that the average bitrate will be kept at around 128kbps. So, when there is lesser detail in your sound and less data can represent that without a loss of quality ogg encoder will use lower one. When music changes rapidly and more data is needed to represent the change a bitrate higher than 128 will be used. By law of averages, it will create a file size roughly equal to that of 128 kbps CBR.
Now, if your source is 128kbps mp3, the maximum detail it has is 128 kilo bits per second... and hence whatever you rip will be lower than this. I have practically seen a 96 kbps ogg as good as a 128 kbps mp3 (however even lower might be possible... depends on how much u experiment and more on the type of music)
I hope I was usefully informative

I use dBpowerAmp
There are other applications around as well. Just do a search to find older topics discussing conversion software

dbpower amp is the boss for converting mp3 to .ogg files......
44100 hz = frequency
64 kbps
and set at constant bitrate
creates files half the size of mp3 and with no loss in quality! (for me anyway!)
goodluck

I converted some D12 MP3 files and they still sound perfect at 96 kbps after that I did one at 64 and it still great! It has gone from 5,7MB to 1,8MB
Now I only need is a converter from 2.5 to 3.5 to use my own Zennheiser headphones. Then it would really kick ass!

@Greeny you are 100% correct, the 64k oggs sound just fine through the 'phones |

for the phone's speaker, i use 48kbps and it sounds just fine. may need to be higher if you use headphones. |

eople, I am looking for a 2,5mm to 3,5mm jackplug converter, but the kind that exist out of "one plug", but with 2 seperates jackplugs (male and female) with a few centimetres of audiocable between it and the 2,5mm plug must not be straight, but with a 90 degree angle so it wll fit good on my P900.
I saw them a few weeks ago on ebay, but cannot find them anymore
I live in Holland, does anybody know of any stores where I can order it and after that pay the postman, or where I can first transfer the cash and then receive it (but not with a creditcard) ?
