I recently was offered a gmail account, which was very kind of the person who gave it to me, but i have to say i wont be using it. Gmail is quite frankly the most sinister and unsubtle mass information gathering technique i have ever come across, and it is a frightening infringement on ones individuality, confidentiality, and privacy.
I'm very interested to hear everyone's opinions of gmail; i for one will not send mail to a gmail account, nor will i encourage the use of it. In fact, i would actively participate in any effort to halt the spread of gmail usage.
Your thoughts please.....

Its the political issues im concerned with, rather than the technical features.

It's not so great as it seems. I use spymac. It's way much better.

it seems all the gmail discussions turn into spymac promotion
personally just the name "spymac" puts me off
I don't trust any of them anyway and don't keep anything too personal on hotmail or gmail but those accounts serve their purpose well

That's not a promotion . I just use it and it's similar 'cos the 1GB account. That's all.

I stay away from free web based email these days anyway.
I'd rather set up a website and have a more exclusive address and less spam

@elrond, no sorry, I didn't mean it like that
anyway these are just throw away accounts. if you don't use them for a period of time they are deleted and the username recycled so I can't see the harm myself
I'm more worried about cookies and spyware on my pc and do a cleanup every day

I use it for storing some big files, other than that I never send any mails

Think charged sites, personal pages or free based ones can be hacked any time. I always imagine how the operator personal reads my sms. We are spyed here on esato too. Welcome in 1984.

It's not less secure, but it's described in it's policy, that they read your e-mails and they do not delete it even if you delete it permanently. That's the point of whole gmail hate IMHO.

Google says it in their policy. Maybe other providers (like microsoft) do it without you knowing it |
