UMTS and CDMA are both 3G, infact UMTS is Actually CDMA3G1x-1900.
Basically a specially adapted 3g band of CDMA1x-1900. |

huh.
i could have sworn reading somewhere that 3g was being adapted to bring some stability to thr mobile industry so that all 3g neyworks around the world run on the same frequency so you can take any handset anywhere in the world and it will work regardless.
am i wrong? (again)

nature, i think we are still a far way from being completely on a single mobile platform..
but, i hear that CDMA 3G1x ev-do and GSM 3G UMTS use the same frequency. that means countries which have CDMA 3G can't use GSM and vice versa. |

im not worried about gsm, its just umts and the other one (i forgot the damn letters!) are you saying then that these two are compatible then? can i take a 3g handset from the uk and use it on a 3g network that runs those other letters?
(damn my memory)

there are two kind of 3g for CDMA ....
1st is : ev-do - with this tech YOU CANNOT MAKE/RECEIVE VID CALLS
2nd : ev-dv - which is an upgrade of the ev-do & with the EV-DV you can make & receive vid. calls .......
+ the ev-dv is much much much better then the UMTS ! it's faster & & higher capabilities
