i couldn't find an answer on search so here goes. i was charging my T610 using a car charger when, after a while, i got this alert msg, "Charging error. Stop charging!". is there a problem with the car charger or my phone?

Impossible to say for sure without examining the phone - but if charging works well with the regular charger I'd bet on the car charger being broken.

There is no way of transforming dc voltage. The only way is to have a resistor in parallel connection with the load, the phone in our case. So there is a voltage loss on the resistor. But if the load changes its resistance (a battery at 20% has different resistance than 30%) then the whole system's resistanse changes. So the voltage going to the phone differs. Only original chargers have a good system. A set of zener diodes. Thats why they are more expensive.

I had an aftermarket charger a few years back that did the same. I ended up having to send my T39M to SE for repair as it burnt out the internal power supply. Only use SE products now.

I've always used after-market products with all kinds of phones and they worked (and still do) great.

I have the same problem with my z710. Except my aftermarket car charger works. This only happens when I use the original charger that came with the phone. Weird

i am also having similar problem on my k790i , tough i am using original sony charger and the problem has come after more than 2 years of error free usage , i also checked the output voltage and ampere rating of the original charge which i am using...voltage is proper (near 5 volts ) but not amperes , i am getting nearly 500mA ( instead of 700mA , as stated in the charger ), dont know if this is the problem., but my phone is getting charged by data cable when connected to pc without any error....so i guess there something in the charger only about 500mA output...and not mobile or battery.

interestingly, in My Phone Explorer software (in the monitor option)...the charging voltage is 4.10 Volts and amperes if 500 mA
